GENERAL SURGERY
 Used by plastic surgeons.
 Used for taking split thickness skin graft.
 Blade used is : Eschmann blade or Down’s blade
 Common site used is thigh, other sites may be arm, leg,
forearm, even abdominal wall.
 Used for suction of secretions during surgery to clear surgical
field, without damaging the surrounding tissues.
 Also used for suction of oropharyngeal secretions to clear airway
and to prevent aspiration
 To examine pathologies in rectum and anal
canal e.g to examine a polyp or piles.
 Used for retraction of skin flaps in
throidectomy
 Used in dissecting and holding fine structures
like cystic duct and cystic artery in open
cholecystectomy or in thyroid surgery to
dissect thyroid vessels.
 Used to hold spermatic cord during inguinal
hernia surgery
 Used to hold cut end vessels in tough fibrous
tissues like muscle fascia, scalp.
 Used for grasping small blood vessels (as
hemostatic), to allow ligation of small blood
vessels, to hold delicate tissues
 Used to hold sponge to clean operative field.
 To swab cavities.
 To hold gall bladder, cervix, stomach during
surgeries
 Used to extract stones from common bile
duct, gall bladder, ureter or bladder
 Used for picking and transferring sterile
gauze
 Used to hold intestine e.g during surgeries
that require resection and anastmosis of
intestine
 Used to fix drapes in a manner to expose
operative field only.
 To fix tubings and cautery wires to drapes in
a way that they don’t fall.
 Used to hold thin but tough tissues like
muscle fascia, subcutaneous tissue, deep
fascia, fibrous capsule of sac for purpose of
giving traction
 Common retractor used in major abdominal
procedures e.g in open cholecystectomy to
retract liver or in open nephrolithotomy to
retract anterior abdominal wall or to retract
abdominal wall in surgeries on intestine. Comes
in several widths.
 Used to retract strong strutures like
abdominal wall muscles and gives wider
space to work.
 Used to retract superficial muscles like in
inguinal hernia surgeries or thyroidectomy
 Used in pelvic surgery for retraction at the
caudal end of abdominal incision.
 Used to hold needle during suturing in
surgery.
 It has serrations to prevent slipping of needle
 Used to grasp fine tissues to facilitate
dissection in areas like face where surgeon
wants better cosmetic results.
 Are of two types toothed and non toothed.
 Used to hold and retract tissues during surgery
and also during suturing…toothed for tough tissue
like muscle fascia, non toothed/plain for
delicate tissue like peritoneum.
 Used to cut sutures.
 Used for cutting delicate tissues like viscera.
 Used to cut thick tissues like muscle or fascia
 Used to fix blade on it for giving surgical
incisions
 Used to give incision in surgery
 Used to clamp blood vessels during surgery
on major organs like liver or used during
anastomosis of major blood vessels.
 Used to lift periosteum from the surface of a
bone. This is essential prior to using any
cutting instrument on the bone
 Used to scrape the bone and to smooth the
margins of bone
 Self retaining retractor used in major
abdominal surgeries
 Used to hold bulky tissues.
 To hold appendix along with mesoappendix
during appendectomy
 Used to pick up appendix during appendectomy.
 Used to hold delicate visceral organs.
 Used to hold cut margins of bladder during
surgeries like open prostetectomy.
