Different Musical Styles / Movements
of the 20th Century (1901-1999)
TRADITIONAL MODERNISM
If music did not evolve, we would not be enjoying music today.
Musical styles of the 20th century serves as the bridge for
composers in crossing the boundaries of traditional music,
transforming it to modernism.
The first half of 20th century marks the existence of various
styles namely; impressionism, primitivism, neo classicism,
avant garde and modern nationalism. All of these styles
contributed to the music as it slowly evolves to modernism.
EARLY 20TH CENTURY MUSICAL STYLES
IMPRESSIONISM
Defined as:
• centered on nature and its beauty, lightness, and brilliance
• gives mood rather than definite emotion
• reflects realities of life but merely suggest it
• Elements are described as:
• unclear melodies
• uses overlapping chords that leads to atonality (having no key at all)
• has irregular or hazy texture
EXPRESSIONISM
Defined as:
• Revealed the composer’s mind, instead of presenting an impression
• Lacks stable and conventional harmonies
• Medium for expressing strong emotions, such as anxiety, rage, and
alienation
• Elements are described as:
• High level of dissonance and extreme contrast of dynamics
• Constantly changing textures, distorted melodies and harmonies
• Extreme pitches with no cadences
PRIMITIVISM
Defined as:
• links to exoticism through the use of materials from other cultures
• links to ethnicity through the use of materials from European
ethnic group
Elements are described as:
• tonal through the asserting of one note as more important than
the others
NEO CLASSICISM
Defined as:
• a partial return to classical way of writing music
• moderating factor between the emotional excesses of the Romantic
period and the violent impulses of the soul in expressionism
Elements are described as:
• combines tonal harmonies with slight dissonances
• adopts a modern, freer use of the seven-note diatonic scale
• has exciting rhythmic patterns also known as syncopations
AVANT GARDE
Defined as:
• closely associated with electronic music
• improvising is a necessity
Elements are described as:
• Ignores traditional rules on harmony, melody, and rhythm
MODERN NATIONALISM
Defined as:
• started by nationalist composers and musical innovators
• combines modern techniques with folk materials
Elements are described as:
• use of polytonality, a kind of atonality that uses two or more
tonal (pitch) centers simultaneously
The evolution of music exist along with the development
in other fields such as science and technology. It made
the composers of 20th century truly innovative. They
experimented with unique and strange styles which
includes electronic music and chance music.
LATE 20th CENTURY MUSICAL STYLES
ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Defined as:
• uses synthesizers, amplifiers, tape recorders, and loudspeakers
• experiments with different sounds that cannot be produced by
regular musical instruments such as the piano or the violin
Elements are described as:
• composer records different sounds that are heard in the
environment such as the bustle of traffic, the sound of the wind, the
barking of dogs, the strumming of a guitar, or the cry of an infant
CHANCE MUSIC
Defined as:
• considers that music happens by chance
Elements are described as:
• accepts all sound as music (including honking cars, rustling
leaves, blowing wind, dripping water, or a ringing phone)

Gather materials that your going to use for this activity.
