Work Rate Problems and Solutions

1. The document provides steps for solving work problems involving multiple workers or machines completing a task together or alone. 2. It explains how to set up equations representing the work rates and time taken to complete the task. 3. Sample problems are worked through as examples, such as determining how long it would take two painters to complete a room if they worked together based on their individual work rates.

(working together)
I can paint the same room in 5
hours using a roller.
I can paint this
room in 20 hours
using a brush
STEPS IN SOLVING WORK PROBLEMS
1. If the job is completed in x days then the rate is days
2. Construct a table showing rate , time and work for each
person/machine
3. The total work completed is the sum of the individual
amounts of work completed
4. If the job is complete, then the total work done is 1 job.
If the job is completed in x days then the rate is
days
State the work rate for each
1. Jhester can clean the room in 3 hours 𝟏
𝟑
2. Mr. Clean can load a truck in 20 mins.
𝟏

Construct a table showing rate , time and work
for each person/machine
Identify their work rates, amount of work done
and time at work
WORK RATE TIME
( Amount of the task = ( Persons work rate) x (Time at work)
completed by that
person)
The total work completed is the sum of the
individual amounts of work completed

Amount completed by Amount completed by

one person/ machine another person/ machine= Whole task

If the job is complete, then the total work done is

1 job.
