Amplifier Classifications and Applications

This document discusses amplifier classification and types. It begins with an introduction to amplifiers, noting that they are electronic devices that increase the strength of weak signals for applications like audio systems and telecommunications. It then covers the main types of amplifiers - Class A, B, AB, C, and D - classified based on their conduction angles. Each class has different characteristics in terms of efficiency, linearity, distortion, and output power. The document concludes by looking at common applications of amplifiers and important design considerations.

Amplifier Classification

Introduction to Amplifiers

What are amplifiers?

Amplifiers are electronic devices that increase the strength of a weak signal, allowing it to be used for a variety of
applications.

The importance of amplifiers

From audio systems to telecommunications, amplifiers are an essential component of many electronic systems and
devices.

Types of amplifiers
There are several types of amplifiers that are classified based on their operating characteristics.
Different Types of Amplifiers
 Class A: Class A amplifier is a high gain amplifier with high
linearity. Conduction angle: 360°

 Class B: Class B amplifiers are those in which the output

transistors only conduct during half of the signal waveform
Conduction angle: 180°

 Class AB: Class AB amplifiers combine Class A and Class B

to achieve an amplifier with more efficiency than Class A but
with lower distortion than Class B.
Conduction angle: between 180° and 360°

 Class C: A class C amplifier is a form of switching amplifier

in which the transistors are on for less than a half cycle often,
much less.
Conduction angle: less than 180°

 Class D: A class D amplifiers are highly efficient (often up to

90% or higher) since the output transistors are either fully
turned on or off during operation
