• Week 3 (18/5/20 – 22/5/20) - Lesson 5 (75mins on each lesson)- Slide 16-21 – Improving life in the slums
• Week 3-4 (1/6/20 –5/6/20) Lesson 6-8 (75mins on each lesson)- slide 22-24 building a slum (send a
picture to your teacher by Friday the 5th of June)

• This is 4 weeks worth of work, we would like the work that we have asked for in by the deadlines but if
you find some work is taking longer than suggested then feel free to let it overlap into another lesson. If
you are having issues with anything then contact your class teacher for help.
• Do all of the work in your books unless it says otherwise.
• Use the headings on each slide as a sub heading in your book and do the relevant work under that
subheading.

• An example of this would be a large scale water and energy project like
building a hydro electric power station

• Small scale projects/investments made to individuals or small businesses.
• Complete the work using the attached documents on the email, Bottom up 1,
2 and 3 on the Wakel River Basin project for an example of this

this is almost 1 in every 8 people on
the planet!

Task – Writing a postcard about life in the
slums
• You are to imagine that you are in the Dharavi slums and you are going to send a postcard describing what its
like in the Dharavi slums.
• You are to send this postcard to your class teacher.
• To do this you must –
1. Print out a picture of the Dharavi slums for the front of the postcard. (If you can’t do this you should sketch
a picture of it)
• This picture needs to have 4-5 labels on it highlighting certain features of the slums.
2. On the back of the postcard you are to write a message to your class teacher describing in specific detail
what your experience has been like. Email to

Improving life in the slums
• An important role which geographers play is to try to combat the
negative problems in certain environments like the slums.
• There are many ways to do this and lots of different groups of people
can play a role in helping with this, including yourself – you may have
donated to charities like comic relief in the past.

Celebrities can play a role by raising awareness
• This is Michael Jackson raising awareness of life
in the Rio slums/Favelas by singing a song about
and shooting a video in the favelas for a song
called - ‘They don’t really care about us’

• You have a choice between building either –

one a mark out of 10 and pick the top 3
per form group.
Building a Favela
Your job is to use your practical skills to build a Favela.
Refer to the attachment on the email for more detail
If you have already done this (I know some were set it by Mrs
Swindlehurst over Easter) then follow the instructions on the next slide.
Building a volcano
Build a volcano which has labels on it that describe certain
features. You have a choice of 2 volcanoes to build –
1. Stratovolcano
2. Shield volcano
