‘’ WHO IS A FILIPINO’’
At first glance, this appears to be a very simple
question to answer. But, if you throw this simple
question randomly to people on the street, you
might be surprised at how differently people, who
call themselves Filipino, answer this question. It has
been more than a century since the Philippines
gained independence from its colonizers, yet it
appears that until now, Filipinos still do not have a
unified notion, or an otherwise clear picture, of who
or what a Filipino is.
WHAT IS
POLITICAL SELF?
One’s political self is his identity
being a member of the community
or country to where he belongs. It
must be the taking of pride of his
belongingness.

Political self and identity are
developed through socialization, through the ways
of people learn the knowledge, norms, values,
motives, and roles appropriate to their positions in
a group or community.
ORIGIN OF POLITICAL SELF
FAMILY
The family has a hierarchical
structure
•Through hierarchy of positions, status and
power.
•Example: Father acts as a leader and
establishes rules to maintain order in the
family
•This shows that authority is necessary in
the development of political self and identity
SCHOOL
The school’s responsibility is to
teach moral, spiritual, and political
values that will help the students to
become patriotic and morally upright
citizen.
Example; UTS subject, GMRC,
ROTC.
Church
Helps the shape ideals of citizenship and
democracy through the religious teachings, values and
tradition
Peers
Interaction with the peers encompasses and
emphasizes the equal distribution of power, rights, and
privileges among members of the group
Mass Media
Key to the source of information on politics.

FILIPINO TRAITS AND
VALUES
Hospitality
Tourists who have visited the Philippines can never forget
the big and brighter smiles of Filipinos making them
known worldwide for their attitude of being hospitable. It
has also been a trade mark of Filipinos to be
Loving and Respectful for the elders.
No matter what happens generally Filipinos care
for their elders up to the last breath of their parents. If they
can't personally care for the elderly parents for very
important reasons they hire caretakers as much as possible
within their homes under their supervision.
CLOSE FAMILY TIES
Family gatherings on special occasions is always observed
among Filipinos. They always consider family members and kins
as close as people to them. To its extreme comes the so called
extended family, where one household is composed of several
families within the same family tree and even relatives.
Cheerful and Happy People
Foreigners observe that Filipinos are a happy people.
Oftentimes you see them friendly, talking with friends and fond
of spending time with sing-a long, hangouts and staying in
beaches to enjoy companionship of friends, family and loved
ones.
Self Sacrifice
Filipinos usually go out their way just so
they could help other people. This can also be an expression of
being hospitable, Willingness to be indebted just to
accommodate friends, family or even strangers at its extreme.
This refers to Filipinos going out of their comfort zones just like
the OFWs who are sacrificing themselves to be far from home
just for the sake of the family.
Bayanihan
This is an attitude of extending services for the communal good.
"Bahala Na"Attitude
means saying no worries, everything can be okey". Originally the word
bathala is the term Filipino natives give to their god. So originally bahala
na means, "God is taking care of everything "
Colonial
Mentality Attitude of Filipinos to somehow favor
support to foreign products more than their own
which is attributed to the centuries of being under
colonization by the Spaniards, American, and
Japan. They seem to be proud of wearing stateside
brands of products rather than their own. During
the time of President Marcos, he advocated the
slogan, "Tangkilikin and Sariling Atin"
Pride
Most Filipinos hold on to the idea that they are more precious than others.
Crab Mentality
A toxic attitude which means being resentful and unhappy for the
good fortune of others.
Filipino Time
Filipinos are not always conscious of time. They always not hit to the time as
