d. Division
ADDITION OF WHOLE NUMBERS
Addition in math is a process of combining two or more numbers.

There are 3 main parts of addition, namely the addend, the

equal sign, and the sum.

In addition sentence 7107+534=7641

7107 and 534 are called addends

while 7641 is called sum.
Addends are the numbers being
added while sum is the result in
addition.
Properties of addition

[Link] Property of addition (CPA) – the order of

addends not does affect the sum
4+3 =7, 3+4 =7 9+2 =11, 2+ 9 = 11

2. Associative Property of addition (APA) – changing the

grouping of the addends does not affect the sum.
8 + (7 +2) = (8 + 7) + 2
8 + 9 = 15 +2
17.= 17
3. Identity Property of Addition (IPA) – the sum of a number
and zero is the same number.
8+0=8 0+2=2 6+ 0 = 6
Subtraction of Whole Numbers
The operation or process of finding the difference between
two numbers or quantities
A subtraction process consists of three parts of numbers,
namely minuend, subtrahend and difference.

Example: 8 – 6 = 2.
Multiplying Whole Numbers
Multiplication of whole numbers is the sort way to do repeated
addition. Multiply means the repeated addition of groups of
equal sizes.
The parts of a multiplication sentence are the multiplicand,
multiplier, and product. The multiplicand is the first number,
the multiplier is the second number, and the product is the
answer.
Multiplication is represented by
the signs cross (×), asterisk *, dot
(·), or a parentesis. While writing
in your notebooks, you are most
likely to use the cross.
DIVISION OF WHOLE NUMBERS
division is called repeated subtraction
There are three main parts to a division problem: the dividend, the
divisor, and the quotient. Dividend: The dividend is the number
that is being divided in the division
process.

Divisor: The number by which the

dividend is being divided by is called the
divisor.

Quotient: The quotient is a result

obtained in the division process.

Remainder: Sometimes, we cannot

divide things exactly.

9. Find the prime factorization of 40.

a. 2 x 2 x 3 x 5

b. 2 x 2 x 5

c. 2 x 5

d. 2 x 2 x 2 x 5
Prime Factorization
Prime Factorization is the process of obtaining prime numbers that
must be multiplied together in order to get a particular number.
9. Find the prime factorization of 40.

a. 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 = 60

b. 2 x 2 x 5 2 x 2 x 5 = 20

c. 2 x 5 2 x 5 = 10

d. 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 2x2x2x5 = 40
Find the prime factorization of 40.
40 is even, so we know that 2 is a factor (as well as being prime)
40 = 2 x 20.
Now we move on to the number 20.

Again 20 is even, so 2 is a factor.

20 = 2 x 10

So 40 = 2 x 20 = 2 x 2 x 10

Now we factorize 10 into 2 x 5 (both prime numbers) and we cannot go any

further, as all the numbers are prime
So 40 = 2 x 20 = 2 x 2 x 10 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5

Our final answer is 40 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 or 23 x 5

10. Find the prime factorization of 45.

a. 3 x 5 15

b. 2 x 3 x 5 30

c. 3 x 3 x 5 45

d. 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 40
Find the prime factorization of 45.
45 is odd, so 2 is not a factor.
As the number ends in a 5 we know that 5 is a factor.
45 = 5 x 9.
Now we have to factorize 9.
9 = 3 x 3 (which is a prime number).

This gives us: 45 = 5 x 9 = 5 x 3 x 3

Our final answer is 45 = 3 x 3 x 5 = 32 x 5

BQ: What are the prime factors of 52?

A. 11 x 2 x 3 = 66 which is not 52 C. 23 x 2 = 46 which is not 52

B. 13 x 2 x 2 = 52, so B is the answer D. 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

= 18 which is not 52

Two Conditions must be met:

1. When you multiply the numbers, it should be equal to 52.
2. All numbers multiplied resulting to 52 must be prime numbers.

To determine the prime factors of 40, begin by dividing the number by the smallest prime number, 2. Thus, 40 divided by 2 equals 20. Next, divide 20 by 2 to get 10, and then divide 10 by 2 to obtain 5. Now, since 5 is a prime number, the factorization process stops here. The prime factorization of 40 is 2 x 2 x 2 x 5 .

To find the percentage of a number or calculate percentage increase, the formula used is: [(New Value - Original Value) / Original Value] x 100. For a price change from P48 to P60, calculated as [(60 - 48) / 48] x 100, the percentage increase is 25%. This formula provides a measure of how much a quantity has grown relative to its initial value, useful in financial contexts like pricing adjustments .

The least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the smallest positive integer that is divisible by both. For numbers 60 and 72, their prime factorizations are 60 = 2^2 x 3 x 5 and 72 = 2^3 x 3^2. The LCM is derived by taking the highest powers of all prime numbers appearing in either factorization, which yields 2^3 x 3^2 x 5 = 360. Hence, 360 is the smallest number divisible by both 60 and 72, aiding in solving problems involving simultaneous operations like adding fractions with differing denominators .

Conversion methods solve such problems by dividing the total capacity by the weight or volume of a single unit, effectively determining the maximum number of smaller units that can fit. For an elevator with a capacity of 605 kg, to find how many passengers weighing 50.5 kg each it can carry, the calculation 605 / 50.5 yields 11.98, meaning it can safely transport 11 passengers. This procedure is critical in engineering and logistics, ensuring safe and efficient utilization of space .

The order of operations (PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction) ensures consistent results across mathematical expressions. It dictates the sequence in which operations should be performed to correctly simplify expressions. For instance, in the expression 5 + 3(42 + 7) − 7(2 + 32 * 8) * 0, following PEMDAS leads to solving within parentheses first, then exponents, and so on, ensuring precise calculation steps yielding 152 as the final result . Skipping these conventions would yield variabilities in results, complicating mathematical consistency .

The number 3 is considered a prime number because it has exactly two distinct positive divisors: 1 and itself. This definition distinguishes prime numbers from composite numbers, which have more than two positive divisors. For example, 6 is a composite number because its divisors include 1, 2, 3, and 6. This fundamental distinction helps in understanding number structure and is crucial for core processes like prime factorization and cryptographic algorithms .

Place value is significant in the Hindu-Arabic numeral system as it determines the value of each digit in a number based on its position. For instance, in the number 4,728, the digit 4 is in the thousands place, valuing it at 4,000. This system simplifies arithmetic calculations by allowing easy alignment of digits according to their values and application of operations at each positional level separately, ensuring consistency in more complex calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division .

The properties of addition, including the commutative property (order of addends does not affect the sum), the associative property (grouping of addends does not affect the sum), and the identity property (adding zero leaves the number unchanged), enable flexible computation in arithmetic. These properties allow for rearranging numbers to simplify calculations, such as reorganizing or regrouping numbers to make mental math easier or efficiently compute additions in a structured sequence .

Conceptual application of round trips involves calculating total travel cost by doubling the one-way fare, hence providing insight into budgeting for entire journeys. In the example, a one-way ticket from Manila to Cebu costs 3,800, so a round-trip ticket costs 7,600. Using 91,200 to buy tickets, dividing this amount by 7,600 gives 12 round-trip tickets, demonstrating practical arithmetic for optimizing resource allocation in travel budgeting .

Ratios provide a systematic method to partition amounts proportionally among individuals according to specified relational values. For instance, dividing P315 among three individuals in a ratio of 4:5:6 involves calculating a common multiple (21) to determine each share (4 x 21, 5 x 21, 6 x 21), resulting in amounts of P84, P105, and P126, respectively. Such calculations ensure equitable distribution based on predefined relational metrics, essential in resource allocation and planning .
