What is the Pinhole Camera?

• The pinhole camera is the simplest kind of


camera. It does not have a lens. It just makes
use of a tiny opening (a pinhole-sized
opening) to focus all light rays within the
smallest possible area to obtain an image, as
clearly as possible. The simple image formed
using a pinhole camera is always inverted.
How is the image formed in a pinhole camera?

• The pinhole camera does not consist of


any lens. It consists of a box with a small
size hole, which acts as the lens for the
pinhole camera. The light enters in a
straight line by the aperture from top of
the box to bottom. The inverted image of
the object is formed inside the box.

Advantages of Pinhole Camera
• Advantages: No focusing is required for image formation. There is no
lens used in the pinhole camera, and the image obtained is free from
optical defects like colour distortion.
• Unlike a lens, a pinhole or other small opening can focus light coming
from any distance. Because it's such a small opening, it only allows
light to come through in one place, and thus in only one direction from
any particular source. So there's no blur and everything is in focus.
Dis-Advantages of Pinhole Camera
• The disadvantages of a pinhole camera are:
• The image is inverted .
• The image is faint.
• It cannot form image of a moving object.
• The image formed is temporary and cannot be stored.
• Pictures are out of focus

• To sum up, A pinhole Camera is a camera which was invented by Ibn Al Haytham
at 5ifth Century BC.
• It had several advantages and dis-advantages.
• The Pinhole Camera was invented to observe solar eclipses without damaging the
eye.
• The structure of a Pinhole Camera consists of a small pinhole in which light passes
through the camera itself as well as the film that is placed inside of camera. When
an object is in front of a Pinhole camera, an image forms on the film.
