What are YOU going to do?


What is a flash flood?
 Flash floods occur within six hours of a rain event, or after a
dam or levee failure, or following a sudden release of water
held by an ice or debris jam.
 Flooding occurs in known floodplains when prolonged
rainfall over several days, intense rainfall over a short period
of time, or an ice or debris jam causes a river/stream to back
up or overflow and flood the surrounding area.
 Two main things to remember – Rain intensity & rain
duration.
Why do they happen?
1. Increased urbanization - As land is converted from fields or
woodlands to roads and parking lots, it loses its ability to
absorb rainfall. Urbanization increases runoff two to six times
over what would occur on natural terrain.
2. Clogged drainage - As people do not dispose of their
garbage correctly in concealed containers, it washes into
existing drainage areas. This creates artificial dams that
artificially elevate water levels during rains via back ups or
breaking free.
3. Building in flood plains - Not planning
properly, or no choice.

What to DO?
1. Develop a Family Disaster Plan - Knowing the elevation of
your property in relation to nearby streams, bridges and
dams. Know the dangers in & around your property!!
2. Discuss floods/disasters with your family & Community.
3. Develop an evacuation plan - Everyone in your family should
know where the emergency supplies are, where/how to
store items, how to get into contact with each other and
where to go if they have to leave: Plan A…Plan B…
4. Develop a Community Emergency Plan
with your church(s) & Neighbors.

Case Scenarios

1. It is a Friday afternoon and it has been raining very heavy for 6 hours straight.
You have an Emergency Disaster Plan and have practiced it. The husband is at
work and the children are at school, while the mother is home. You have just
heard of a flood begin to happen around your neighborhood. Describe what you
need to do in detail.

2. Your group has been asked by your church’s leadership to create a church
based community flood disaster plan. They primarily want it for your
congregation, but would like to expand it to network with partnering churches.
Considering the Disaster Management and Disaster Cycle models discussed, come
up with a detailed plan and share it.
