Functions & Descriptions
1. Facilitate the stable adhesion of basal epithelial cells to the underlying basement
membrane.
2. Are primarily used for cell movement and are found in prokaryotes as well as some
eukaryotes.
3. Are minute hair-like projections on the outer surface of a eukaryotic cell.
4. Form the continuous intercellular barrier between epithelial cells.
5. Are channels that physically connect adjacent cells, mediating the rapid exchange of
small molecules.
6. Play an important role in the digestion and absorption of intestinal contents.
Functions & Descriptions
7. Are responsible for amoeboid movement, a sliding or crawling-like form of locomotion.
Also know as “false feet”.
8. Protects the plant cell by not allowing water to leak out of the cell.
9. Performs multiple functions including initiation and stabilization of cell-cell adhesion,
regulation of the actin cytoskeleton, intracellular signaling and transcriptional regulation.
10. Are molecules that comprise protein and carbohydrate chains that are involved in many
physiological functions including immunity.
Lesson Objectives
After a 1-hour lesson about cell modification, students of STEM 12 are
expected to:
[Link] cell modifications in a cell;
[Link] the different modifications in a cell;
[Link] the structure and function of different modifications within a cell;
[Link] cells that apply the different cell modifications;
[Link] create their own specialized cells; and
[Link] and value the significance of different cell modifications

Storyboard
1. For this activity, the teacher will show 5 different pictures of cell
modifications.
2. For each picture, 4 students will be called to guess and answer the
question given for each picture.
3. But before giving their answer, the student should give 3
descriptions to the pictures, hence, making it a storyboard.
4. After giving their guesses, the teacher will ask the whole class who
they think is correct among the four.
5. Same process will be repeated until all 5 pictures are done.

What are Cell Modifications
Are specialized function or modifications re-acquired by
the cell after cell division that helps the cell in different
beneficial ways.
There are 3 types of cell modifications: Apical, Basal,
Lateral
Apical Modifications
Cell modification found on the top or surface of the cell.
1. Cilia
2. Flagella
3. Microvilli
4. Pseudopods
5. Cell Wall
6. Glycoproteins
Cilia
Made up of microtubules are
small hair-like protuberances on
the outside of eukaryotic cells.
They are primarily responsible
for locomotion, either of the cell
itself or of fluids on the cell
surface.
Flagella
Have a whip-like appearance
that helps to propel a cell
through the liquid. Some special
flagella are used in few
organisms as sensory organs
that can sense changes in pH
and temperature. It’s also made
out of microtubules.
Microvilli
On the surface of epithelial
cells such as those lining
the intestine increase the
cell's surface area and thus
facilitate the absorption of
ingested food and water
molecules.
Pseudopods
Temporary protrusion or
retractile process of the
cytoplasm of a cell (as an
amoeba or a white blood
cell) that functions especially
as an organ of locomotion or
in taking up food or other
particulate matter.
Cell Wall
Surrounds the plasma
membrane of plant cells and
provides tensile strength and
protection against mechanical
and osmotic stress. Jupiter is
the biggest planet in the Solar
System and the fourth-
brightest object in the night sky
Glycoproteins
Are molecules that comprise protein and
carbohydrate chains that are involved in
many physiological functions including
immunity. Many viruses have
glycoproteins that help them enter bodily
cells, but can also serve to be important
therapeutic or preventative targets.
Fimbriae
Fimbriae are long filamentous polymeric
protein structures located at the surface
of bacterial cells. They enable the
bacteria to bind to specific receptor
structures and thereby to colonize
specific surfaces.
Basal
Cell Modification found at the bottom or basal
surface of the cell.
1. Hemidesmosomes
Hemidesmosomes
A specialization of the plasma
membrane of an epithelial cell that is
similar to half a desmosome and serves
to connect the basal surface of the cell to
the basement membrane. Basal Lamina
is an example.
Basal
Lateral
Junctions for communication are also known as
communicating junctions.
Channels can be closed to connect the
cytoplasm of neighboring animal cells.
1. Tight Junctions
2. Gap Junctions
3. Adherens Junctions
Tight Junctions
A protein complex between
two cells that creates a seal
to prevent any leakage of the
content through the cell
membranes.
Gap Junctions
Gap junctions are specialized
intercellular connections between a
multitude of animal cell-types. They
directly connect the cytoplasm of two
cells, which allows various molecules,
ions and electrical impulses to directly
pass through a regulated gate between
cells.
Adherens
Junctions
Performs multiple functions
including initiation and
stabilization of cell-cell
adhesion, regulation of the
actin cytoskeleton,
intracellular signaling and
transcriptional regulation.

“Cell Superhero”
In this post-activity, students will create their own specialized cells to explain the powers of some
superheroes.
1. Students will retain their groups composed of 4 members from the past discussions.
2. Students will be reminded a week prior that they should bring their art materials.
3. All 4 groups will be randomly assigned of their superhero (Superman, Spiderman, Hulk,
Wolverine).
4. The goal is for them to explain the powers of the hero assigned to them by creating their
own specialized and modified cell. Their work should answer the following questions:
