What is Public Speaking?
• Definition – is a way of making your ideas public.
• The important of public speaking is true across the
board.
• Public speaking were ranked first among the
personal qualities of college graduates sought by
employers.
• When employers decide whom to hire and whom to
promote employers rank the ability to communicate
above the technical knowledge.

Even with the growth of internet and new


technologies, face to face communication is still
vital.
Similarities between Public
Speaking and Conversation
1. Organizing your thoughts logically.
- Systematically, step by step and in organize
manners.
2. Tailoring your message to your audience.
- Develop the message delivery style and technique
based on audience perceptions and background.
3. Telling a story for maximum impact
- Carefully build up your story, adjusting your
words and tone.
4. Adapting to listener feedback
- Aware of the listener’s feedback (facial expression,
physical reaction & etc).
Differences between Public
Speaking and Conversation
Conversation: 7-8 friends
Public speaking: 20-30 people
Three major differences between conversation and public
speaking:
1. Public speaking is more highly structured
• PS demand more detailed planning and preparation.
2. Public speaking required more formal language
• Slang, jargon and bad grammar (minimize).
3. Public speaking requires a different method of
delivery
• Conversation: Adopt a casual posture and
vocalized pauses (uh, er,,emm).
• Public speaking: Adjust your voice, avoid
distracting mannerisms and verbal habits.
Developing Confidence
Stage fright: 42% of respondents
being terrified of speaking in
public.

NERVOUSNESS is NORMAL!
• Celebrity
• Politicians
• Athletes
Dealing with Nervousness
Positive Nervousness: Controlled nervousness
that helps energize a speaker for her or his
presentation.

1. Acquire Speaking Experience


• More you learn and more speeches you
give then less threatening speechmaking
will become.
2. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare.
3. Think Positively.
• CONFIDENCE: Power of positive
thinking.

4. Use The Power Of Visualization.
• Making eye contact.
• Clear voice.
5. Know That Most Nervousness Is Not
Visible.
• Seating & heart is pounding is normal.
Audience not realize and act cool and
confident.
6. Don’t Expect Perfection.
• Sometime, what you have planned will be
missing.
Avoiding Ethnocentrism
Ethnocentrism:
• Definition- The belief that one’s own group or
culture is superior to all other group cultures.
• Play a positive role in creating group pride and
loyalty.

Note:
• Effective public speaker in a multicultural world,
speaker should keep in mind that all people have their
special beliefs and customs.
• Respect and you will be fine.
