ORGANISING IDEAS

The organization of ideas will vary somewhat depending on the types of essay.
In IELTS, you are expected to be able to give responses to different types of
essay.

Each type has its own structure. Being able to organise your answer for each
type means that you need to familiarise yourself with all essay types and their
suggested structures.

As a brief introduction (you will be learning about each type of essay in detail in
the later sections of the module), here are the essay types and the suggested
structures:

1. Using linking words

An essay should have at least 4 paragraphs. For your essay to be easy to follow,
you need to use coherent and cohesive devices-linking words.

These are the reasons for using linking words in your essay.
• Linking words are essential to make your writing clear.
• Provide cohesion to the writing.
• Illustrate how the clauses/ parts of the text are related to each other.
• Add extra information to the main point, like contrast, emphasis or a list
of examples.
• They help express purpose and opinion.
• They help make a suitable conclusion

Make sure your writing contains a good sprinkling of linking words.

Using too much of them would throw off the readers from one
thought to another, thus reminding them of a bad roller-coaster ride!

The following is another high band score essay sample. Arrange the sentences to
make a coherent and cohesive essay. HINT: the essay consists of 4 paragraphs.
1. To commence with, acquisition of knowledge with computers involves fun and learning at the same time. Merely touching
these digital devices is an activity full of enjoyment for a child.
2. It is not doubtful that with the introduction of computers, the process of delivering education has changed to a much greater
extent.
3. Merely touching these digital devices is an activity full of enjoyment for a child.
4. Though these digital devices have expedited the availability of data, they are not substituting of learning process that
happens by human interaction.
5. Apart from this, software interactivity and relaxing attitude while learning from computer contribute to grasping knowledge
in an effective way.
6. To conclude with, according to me, teachers who are the highly respected professionals in the society will continue to play
the most important role in shaping the career as well as the character of the students so that they not only succeed in their
life but become better human beings too.
7. On the other hand, though the increased complexity of intelligent software embedded in the digital material brings high
quality education to the students, the need of human interactive sessions would always be present at least in the
foreseeable future.
8. In my opinion, it can be expected that role of teachers may change from classroom teacher to an online teacher, but
complete disappearance of classroom sessions is not possible.
9. For example, only a human teacher can help a student overcoming his shortcomings with individualized attention.
10. Therefore, expertise of a teacher in explaining the complexity and clarifying doubt can hardly be mimicked by the computer,
no matter how much sophisticated the software is.
