Narratives are stories – purposeful stories retelling the historical
events of the past that are intended to give meaning and
direction for a given people in the present.

Biblical narratives are inspired by the Holy Spirit as they are, the
story they tell is not so much our story as it is God's story-it
becomes ours as he “writes” us into it
The recounting of a historical event that illustrates God’s
intervention with man

General Principles
1. The Historical narratives do not give us exhaustive details of any historical situations
or events or characters.

2. The Old Testament narratives also teach us.

3. We must focus on the main message of the narrative and not be distracted with
matters mentioned in the narrative.

4. We must not conclude that because it happened in the biblical narrative it


should or must happen to us also.

5. There are other genres within in narratives.

6. All of the scripture is inspired by the Spirit of God (1 Tim. 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21).

7. There are no hidden spiritual meanings in a narrative. We should not allegorize


the events in the narrative.
8. We should not forget the covenant stipulations

The Three Levels of Biblical Narratives


Creation > Fall > Israel > The First Coming of Christ >
Redemption > Consummation
9. We must interpret and see the meaning of the narratives as a part of the theme of
the book.

10. All of the Old Testament Scriptures points out to Christ (Luke 24:44-47).
