Environmental Issue: Water Pollution

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances contaminate bodies of water, making the water unsafe or undesirable for human use and other purposes. It has both natural and human causes, with human causes including acid rain, ocean dumping, urban runoff, oil spills, ocean acidification, and waste water from industrial and agricultural activities. This pollution degrades water quality and harms the environment by reducing oxygen levels needed by aquatic life and disrupting food chains, and it poses health risks to humans through contaminated drinking water. Solutions involve reducing pollution at its sources and promoting conservation.

POLLUTION
--the action of polluting especially
by environmental contamination
with man-made waste; also the
condition of being polluted.
What is water pollution?

Water pollution is the contamination of
water bodies.
It occurs when nutrients and other
materials are released, degrading the
quality of the water for the users.
Includes all the materials that cannot be
naturally broken down by water.
Natural Causes of Water
Pollution
 Volcanic eruption
 Algae blooms
 Stilt from floods
Human Causes
of Water Pollution
1. Acid Rain --Air pollution can also have a direct effect
on water pollution. When particles like sulfur dioxide
get high into the air they can combine with rain to
produce acid rain.
2. Ocean dumping --The garbage produce by each
household in the form of paper, glass, plastic, food if
collected and deposited into the sea.
3. Urban runoff-- is surface runoff of rainwater
created by urbanization
[Link] spills-- an accidental release of oil into a
body of water, as from a tanker, often presenting a
hazard to marine life and the environment.
5. Ocean acidification--the chemical changes in
the ocean as a result of carbon dioxide emissions.
6. Waste water—industrial and agricultural
practices produce waste water that can cause
pollution of many lakes and rivers.
Effects on the Environment
 insufficient oxygen in the
water for the fish to breath.
 affects the entire food chain.
Sewage can also cause major
problems in rivers.
Water pollution from major
events like acid rain or oil spills
can completely destroy marine
habitats.
Effects on Health
Dirty, polluted water can make
them sick and is especially tough
on young children. Some bacteria
and pathogens in water can make
people so sick they can die.
Solutions
Save water
Don’t use weed killer
Trash
Facts About Water
Pollution
 The largest quantities of water are in the oceans.
 Between 5 and 10 million people die each year from
water pollution.
 A lack of safe water and sanitation leads to malaria
and diarrhea.

Water Pollution is common, and is

an area of high alert. Water needs
to be preserved and respected
today, for us to live a tomorrow.
