HUMAN SETTLEMENTS
• Human Settlement means cluster of dwellings of any type or size
area.
• The complexity of a settlement can range from a minuscule number
of dwellings grouped together to the largest of cities with surrounding
urbanized areas.
• Settlements may include: hamlet, village, town, cities.
Settlement
Hierarchy
Geographers classify settlements according
to their size. The call this the ‘Settlement
hierarchy’.
The pyramid diagram shows that the smaller
type of settlement is, the more there are; the
larger type of settlement is, the fewer there
are; for example there are more villages than
a town..
Megapolis a settlement where conurbations have joined up to form a huge urban area 10 million +
Conurbation a group of large cities and their suburbs that have joined up or have strong links 3-10 million
connecting them
Metropolis A city and its surrounding towns that have begun to join up 1-3 million
Large city a city that has a large population and many services, such as several hospitals, 300,000-1million
banks, large businesses, large shopping centers, high schools,
colleges/universities, sports centers, theatres and cinemas, as well as factories
and other industries
City has many of the services a large city has but not in such large numbers 100,000-300,000
Large town has some of the services a city has; a greater variety of shops than smaller 20,000-100,000
towns
Town Some of the services a large tow has; usually at least one supermarket and a 1000-20,000
greater variety of shops than a village has; at least one secondary school, a few
primary school, police station, medical center and a market
village A few services: perhaps a shop and a workshop 100-1000
hamlet Hardly any services; perhaps none <100
Isolated dwelling Usually in a rural area, for example, a farmhouse 1 family
Types of settlements
MEGAPOLIS
• The Karachi metropolitan area, with a population of 16.094 million is large enough to be called a megalopolis. But the settlements have joined up to
make one large Urban area and they are not conurbation.
• Gauteng city Region in South Africa, includes the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg, with several other cities, and has population of 15.2 million.
• CONURBATION
• Frankfurt Rhine-Main in Germany, with a population of almost 5.8 million makes it a conurbation in the settlement hierarchy
• Greater Boston in the USA, whose population of around 4.8 million includes the cities of Boston and Providence
• METROPOLIS
• Faisalabad in Pakistan with a population of 3.462 million is a metropolitan area
• Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom, with a population of 2.78 million is classified as metropolis.
CITY
• A population of nearly 2.3 million in the 2017 census makes Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, a large city
TOWN
Kotri is called a city, but with a population of 437,561, it would be classified as large town in the settlements hierarchy.
Village
Rasool Pur lies to the west of Hafizabad, in population of 5548 people and the range of its services make it an small town
HAMLET
Siddique Roonjho on a piece of land almost surrounded by water on the bank of the river Indus in Sindh, with a population of [Link] has no services.
THE PATTERN
OF
SETTLEMENT
NUCLEATED OR CLUSTER
The homes and other buildings are close
together around a center. The center could
be a market place, place of worship etc.
LINER OR RIBBON
A linear settlement is a (normally small to
medium-sized) settlement or group of
buildings that is formed in a long line.[1]
Many of these settlements are formed along
a transport route, such as a road, river, or
canal.
DISPERSED
Homes are quite far apart in their own
useful situations. Perhaps surrounded by
farmland or forest
ISOLATED
Single dwellings that are very far apart
FACTORS AFFRCTING THE
SETTLEMENTS
• Factors affecting settlements are
• Climate
• Economic
• Physical factors
• Traditional factors
FUTURE SETTLEMENTS
• Future settlements will be planned settlements. Future settlements
will have high services.
• Future settlements will develop in populated and huge urban areas.
• Future settlements will develop for high order services and have
influence on people
• The future settlements will have many functions and will develop for
certain situations like controlling the population and providing more
services and settlements for people
