BODY IMAGE
• This is defined as a person’s opinions,
thoughts and feelings about his or her body
and physical appearance.
• Feelings about body image can be positive or
negative or both, these feelings are influenced
by individual and environmental factors.
FEATURES OF BODY IMAGE
• Size
• Height
• Racism
• Ethnicity
• Eyes
• Colour of skin and hair.
PUBERTY AND BODY CHANGES
• The bodies of boys and girls change a lot during puberty.
These changes can influence self image of the adolescent.
• Puberty affects body image of boys in the following areas;
broader chest, bigger muscles, growth of moustache and
beards, increase in height and increased weight gain.
• In girls, pubertal changes are; breast enlargement, broader
hips, increase in height and increased weight gain.
• These changes results in a perception that adolescents are
adults.
EFFECTS OF PUBERTAL CHANGES ON BODY
IMAGE
• Changes in body appearance in boys and girls
• Maturity of sex organs
• Increase in height and weight
• Self discovery
• Change in appearance which brings about
attraction between boys and girls.
• * highlight misconceptions about beauty on
body image.
INDIVIDUAL UNIQUENESS
• No two individuals are exactly the same, both
in character and appearance.
• There is need to see yourself as a good-
looking and wonderful creature irrespective of
your appearance.
• We need to see ourselves as unique, accept
and appreciate ourselves and above all,
maintain good personal hygiene.
HOMEWORK
• Explain (i) body image (ii) individual
uniqueness.
• State some effects of pubertal changes on
body image.
