How do tsunamis form?
• Tsunamis are usually triggered by earthquakes
• The crust shifting is the primary effect: a
knock-on (secondary) effect of this is the
displacement of water above the moving crust
• This is the start of a tsunami

Tsunami Timeline of Events From Start to End
A. The oceanic crust is forced down below the continental crust
and melts.
B. The movement of the plates causes an earthquake
C. In the deep sea the wave travels quickly and is not very high.
D. Deep below the ocean, the continental crust and the oceanic
crust push together.
E. The wave slows down and increases in height as it reaches
shallow water and land.
F. The huge wave crashes onto land, low lying areas are
destroyed.
G. Water above the location of the earthquake is pushed
upwards causing a ripple/wave in the ocean.
