Venn Diagram Set Operations Guide

The document discusses Venn diagrams and how to solve problems involving sets using Venn diagrams. It provides examples of word problems involving sets and their solutions through drawing and analyzing Venn diagrams. Key steps discussed are identifying the given sets, filling in data on the Venn diagram, solving for each set region starting from the overlap moving outwards, and ensuring all numbers add up properly.

Application
of Sets
We have seen the
importance of using Venn
diagrams in presenting sets.
The relationship between sets
can easily be visualized using
Venn diagrams.
In solving word problems
involving Venn diagrams, it is
extremely important to:
1. Read the question carefully and
note down all key information.
2. Know the standard parts of a
Venn diagram.
3. Work in a step by step
manner.
4. Check in the end that all
numbers add up properly.
Steps in solving set problems:
1. Identify all the given sets in
the problem. The unwritten
word, and probably the most
important word in a Venn
diagram is the word “only”.
Steps in solving set problems:
2. Fill in the given data in the
Venn diagram. Write the given
cardinality beside the name of
the set.
Steps in solving set problems:
3. Start at the overlap of the
circles in the diagram and work
your way out.
Steps in solving set problems:
4. Solve for the cardinality of each
set including set U (universal set)
and Set N (this region represents
the elements which do not belong
in the two sets).
Example #1:
A group of 30 students were asked
whether they watch ABS-CBN TV
shows or GMA – 7 TV shows or shows
of both channels. 18 of these
students watch ABS-CBN shows and
20 watch GMA – 7 shows.
1. How many students watch ABS-
CBN shows only? ____
2. How many students watch GMA-
7 shows only? ____
3. How many students watch both
channels? ___
Example #2:
Ten friends are having breakfast.
Seven chose coffee, five chose tea
and three chose both coffee and tea.
How many did not chose any
beverage?
Seatwork 1. __
Twenty students went to the
market . Eleven of them bought
red t-shirts. Nine bought green t-
shirts and six bought red and green
t-shirts. How many did not buy any
t-shirt?
Example #4:
The Venn diagram shows is
students of G7-Green having
Facebook account or twitter
account or both.
a. How many students have Facebook
account? ___
b. How many students have Twitter
account? ___
c. How many students do not use any
of the two accounts? ___
[Link] many students are there in G7-
Green ___
Example #4:
Example #5:
A class of 40 students completed
a survey on what pets they like.
The choices were: cats, dogs, birds.
Everyone like at least one pet.
28 students liked cats
19 students liked dogs
15 students liked birds
12 students liked cats and birds
8 students liked cats and dogs
10 students liked cats and birds but not dogs
2 students liked dogs and birds but not cats
2 students liked the three pets
1. How many like cats only? ___ dogs only?
___ birds only? ___
2. How many like cats and dogs but not
birds? ___
3. How many like dogs and birds but not
cats? ___
4. How many like cats and birds but not
dogs? ___
Example #6:
Analyze the venn diagram
showing the students who went to
the three tourist spots in Tagaytay:
Peoples Park, Sky Ranch and Picnic
Grove.
1. How many students went to
Peoples Park? ___ Sky Ranch?
___ Picnic Grove? ___
2. How many students went to
Peoples Park only? ___ Sky Ranch
only? ___ Picnic Grove only? ___
3. How many students went to Peoples Park
and Sky Ranch but not in Picnic Grove? ___
4. How many students went to Sky Ranch
and Picnic Grove but not in Peoples Park?
___
5. How many students went to Peoples Park
and Picnic Grove but not in Sky Ranch? ___
6. How many students went to all
the three tourist spots? ___
7. How many did not go to the
three tourist spots?___
8. How many students went to
Tagaytay? ___
