KITCHEN DESIGN

AND
LAYOUT
Kitchen Layout
Is the detailed plan or arrangement of various areas in the kitchen in-
cluding the location of the facilities needed in these areas. The overall
appearance of the kitchen lies on the design applied, keeping in mind
the size, shape, style, and decoration of the establishment.
Planning Your kitchen Layout

Three stages to plan a kitchen

01 Measure and note the position of the existing services, win-

dows, and doors.

Work out the plan to get the appliances , work tops, and cupboards
02
wh you want them.

Decide on any changes to the service ( electricity, water, drains)

03 you need.
The Five Basic Kitchen Layouts

01 One Wall or Straight Layout

This layout places the main cooking equipment

in line usually against the wall. It allows easy

access to all appliances and it does not provide

enough storage space.

02 Corridor Layout

A layout with long, narrow area with doors at each end.

You have little choice other than two facing rows of

appliances and storage units. Two centers are placed

along two walls facing each other. You should allow a

space between two rows for a safe walk-through

corridor and to allow comfortable acess to appliances.

In really narrow rooms, the fittings might need to be

restricted to one side of the room.

03 L- shaped Layout

This is often the best solution where the kitchen

can fit into a corner. It is used in large kitchen

and has two work centers, one is placed on a

long

wall and the other one on a smaller wall.

04 FILE Layout
U- shaped

This Layout is convenient as all working areas are

within easy reach. It may be the only choice for small
rooms although it can also be used with effect where
a kitchen are needs to be fitted at one end of a larger
room. A work center is placed along each of the
three walls. Try to allow a space between the parallel
sides of the U design.

05 Island / Peninsula Layout

This is often thought of as a luxury, the island

layout needs a fairly large room, however in such
a room, it does reduce the amount of walking you
need to do. Try to allow a space between the island
and any other cupboard / obstruction etc. Although
the design shown has the cooking hob on the is-
land,
the island could be used for the food preparation
area. remember that services will need to be taken
to the island or one or two centers are loacated at
the center of the room.
