BOWLING
*Bowling Is and indoor game, in which players
must knock as many pins as
possible, to score points by rolling a ball on a
smooth wooden surface or lane.
*Bowling started in England in the 1100s. The
game was first mentioned in writing King
Edward III in 1366. During the 17th century,
English, Dutch, and Germany settlers importer
their own version of bowling to America.
Bowling has been popular in America since
Colonial days.
Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno is the country's most
distinguished bowler. He won the World Cup of Bowling
four times (1976, 1980, 1992, and 1966) and was the first
international male bowling athlete enshrined in the
International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum.
According to a survey by a local poll firm, Social Weather
Situations, in 1966, bowling is the fourth most popular
sports in the Philippines.
EQUIPMENT
There are ten pins that are set in a triangular pattern, at the
end of a bowling alley. The player must find a ball that
suits her/his hand and fingers.
There are two major types of bowling balls. The ten-pin
bowling ball is used in regular competitions. Ten-pin balls
have a different weight and have three holes wherein the
player’s fingers inserted before rolling. The second type is
a smaller and lighter bowling ball called duckpin.
Duckpin balls don’t have holes and can be held in one
hand. Duckpin games are given three balls for each
frame.
GAME DISCRIPTION
AND PROCEDURE
Two or more players can play bowling. As each player takes a turn,
they try to knock down all ten of the pins. Each player is given up
to two opportunities to do this. The player will roll their bowling
ball down the bowling alley towards the pins in an attempt to
knock pins over. The pins that are knocked down in this first
attempt are counted and recorded. The pinsetter at the bowling
alley will remove the pins still standing, clear the levelled pins, and
return the standing pins back in the place.
The bowler’s ball returned and the bowler gets a second attempt at
knocking the pins over. The bowler again rolls their ball down the
alley to try and knock any remaining pins down. The number of
pins knocked down on this second attempt is then recorded. The
bowlers score is then the pins from the first roll, plus the pins from
the second roll, then added to any previous score.
SCORING SYSTEM
In score keeping of a game in bowling each set of ten
pins is called a frame and an entire game has ten
frames. The object of each frame in bowling is
knocking over all ten pins, and the goal of the game is
to have high score.
When bowlers accomplished the goal of each frame by
knocking all the ten pins, they are awarded a bonus.
The bonus that is awarded will depend on whether they
knocked at all ten pins down on their first ball or the
second roll.
THE STRIKE = X
*When a bowler knocks all the ten pins down on the first ball roll he said to have rolled a strike. The
scorekeeper will mark an X for that frame and the bowler’s score is the ten pins that he just knocked down
plus he gets to add to that what he knocks down in his next two ball rolls. Consequently, you may now know
what a bowler’s score is on that frame for up to two more frames
THE SPARE
*When a baller is ten pins down on the second ball roll they are said to have rolled spare. The score keeper
will mark a / for that frame and the bowler score is the ten pins that he just knocked down in addition to that
what he knocks down on his next ball roll.
*Each bowler gets a strike or spare in the first 10 frames. Score continues to accumulate as each bowler take
turns (frames). The bowler who throws a strike in the tenth frame must roll additional balls to complete the
score for the 10th frame.
PROPER BOWLING FORM
*An improper way of playing bowling can lead to long-term or chronic injuries like aback and
arm strains. One must know and practice the fundamental skills and techniques of bowling to
avoid injuries in the game, say experts at Bowlers' World Club (BWC) in London.
*Beginners can start by holding the ball, inserting the middle and ring fingers in two adjacent
holes and thumb in the other hole. Hold the ball in front of the body near waist level, stand
upright and use the other free hand to support the weight of the ball. Take up a position well
behind the foul line.
*Take a few steps (2-3) forward while lowering the ball with one hand down in a backward
pendulum motion behind your body. When the ball has been swung back, lower your hips and
bend your knees as you prepare to release the ball on the lane.
