Objectives
The learner should be able to:
1. define quadrilaterals of each type
2. identify quadrilaterals that are
parallelograms
3. determine the conditions that
guarantee a quadrilateral a
parallelogram.

Quadrilateral
Is a close plane figure consisting
of four line segments or sides.
A parallelogram is a quadrilateral with two pairs of opposite
sides that are parallel.
Illustration
The illustration represents a parallelogram; both
pairs of opposite side are parallel and congruent,
the opposite angles are congruent.

1. A Quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both
pairs of opposite sides are congruent
Then the measures of
side AR = 6.40cm and
measure of side CE=
The pairs of opposite 6.40cm; also measure
sides are side AR and of side AC =3.43cm
side CE; side AC and and measure of RE=
side RE. 3.43cm.
The pairs of opposite side of CARE are congruent.
Therefore, quadrilateral CARE is a parallelogram.
2. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both
pairs of opposite angle are congruent.
The measures of
∠A=120° and the
The pairs of measures of ∠H
opposite angles =120°; also measure
are ∠ A and ∠ H; of ∠M = 60° and the
∠ M and ∠T. measure of ∠T=60°.
The pairs of opposite angles of MATH are congruent.
Therefore, quadrilateral MATH is a parallelogram.
3. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if both pairs
of consecutive angles are supplementary.
The pairs of The measure of
consecutive ∠M=60° ;
angles are ∠ A m∠A=120°;
and ∠ T; ∠ T and m∠T=60°; and
∠H; ∠ M and ∠ m∠H=120°.
H; ∠ A and ∠ M.
∠A + ∠T = 120°+60° = 180°
∠ T + ∠H = 60°+120° = 180°
∠M + ∠H = 60°+120° = 180°
∠A + ∠M = 120°+60° = 180°
Therefore, quadrilateral MATH is a parallelogram.
4. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
the diagonals bisect each other.
A diagonal is a line segment joining two non consecutive
vertices of a polygon.
A line segment bisects another line segment if it divides the
segment into two congruent parts.
4. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
the diagonals bisect each other.
Diagonals are WR
and OD which
intersect at point A.
The pairs of segments formed
by intersecting diagonals are:
OA and DA; WA and RA.
OA ≅ DA
WA ≅ RA
Diagonals, WR and OD quadrilateral WORD bisect each other.
Therefore, quadrilateral WORD is a parallelogram.
5. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if each
diagonal divides a parallelogram into
two congruent triangles.
Two Triangles are congruent if the corresponding sides are
equal in length, and their corresponding angles are equal in
measure.
5. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if each
diagonal divides a parallelogram into
two congruent triangles.
RS is the diagonal of ROSE. It divides the quadrilaterals
into two triangles and those are △ ROS and △ SER.
The pairs of corresponding sides are The pairs of corresponding angles are
OR and SE ∠RSO and SRE
OS and ER ∠ROS and ∠SER
RS and SR ∠OSR and ∠ERS
are all congruent are all congruent
The pairs of corresponding sides and corresponding
angles are congruent, △ROS and △ SER are congruent.
Therefore, quadrilateral ROSE is a parallelogram.
6. A quadrilateral is a parallelogram if
one pair of opposite sides are both
congruent and parallel.
The pair of opposite side of ROSE is OS and RE and they
are congruent and parallel.
Therefore, quadrilateral ROSE is a parallelogram.
