PCB Failure Causes and Prevention Tips

Most failures of engine control consoles and alarm monitoring systems are caused by issues with printed circuit boards (PCBs) inside electrical devices. This seminar discusses common PCB failures such as burned out electrical components, detached PCB patterns, and damaged capacitors. It also provides tips for preventing failures through proper handling, inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of electronic parts and PCBs. Regular maintenance can help extend the life of electrical devices and reduce costs.

Most failures occurring on Engine Control Consoles
and Alarm Monitoring Systems are related to electrical
printed circuit boards (PCBs) inside electrical devices.

In this seminar you will learn about these
failures through pictures of actual examples.
Burnout of electrical components
Aluminum electrolytic capacitor

Deterioration of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor

caused leakage of electrolytes, resulting in a short
circuit between the connector terminals.
Burnout of electrical components
IC semiconductor

The IC semiconductor generated

heat and the surface burned out
due to an overcurrent flow inside
the IC semiconductor.
Burnout of electrical components

Burnout of electrical components
PCB pattern (conducting wire)

The pattern (conducting wire) of the PCB has detached

as a result of the heat generated from a current higher
than the allowable current.
Rust

The relay case and diode lead has rusted, and

resulted in the corrosion of the metal part (due
to an increase in resistance).

 Keep spare PCBs in special antistatic packs.

 When handling PCBs remove static charge
from body by grounding clip.
 Use low voltage soldering iron with grounding

Overview
Prevention of Electrical Faults
Regular and proper maintenance can prevent electrical faults due to a malfunction or failure
of an electrical PCB. Prevention of a malfunction or failure has the following advantages.
- Extended life of an electrical device
- Reduction of running costs

Maintenance
In order to reduce the risk of an unexpected malfunction or failure, users should be aware of
the replacement period of a PCB (or an electrical component) and conduct regular inspection
and maintenance. The service life of a PCB (including spares) varies depending on the
surrounding environment, usage level, and/or the storage environment.

Inspection and cleaning
Regular inspection and proper cleaning prevents rust and dust from occurring. Early
discovery of rust and dust is the most effective method for extending the service life of an
electrical device and reducing running costs.
