• Spoken word is a poetic performance art that is word-based. It is an
oral art that focuses on the aesthetics of word play such as intonation and
voice inflection. It is a "catchall" term that includes any kind of poetry
recited aloud, including poetry readings, poetry slams, jazz poetry, and hip
hop, and can include comedy routines and prose monologues Although
spoken word can include any kind of poetry read aloud, it is different from
written poetry in that how it sounds is often one of the main components.
Unlike written poetry, it has less to do with physical on the page aesthetics
and more to do with phonaesthetics, or the aesthetics of sound.
• History
Spoken word has existed for many years. Long before writing, through a cycle of
practicing, listening and memorizing, each language drew on its resources of sound
structure for aural patterns that made spoken poetry very different from ordinary

• Spoken poetry is written on a page but performed for an audience heavy use of rhythm,

• Concrete Language - Use words and phrases that project on the minds of the listeners: vivid
images, sounds, actions If your poem is rich with imagery, your listeners will see, smell and
taste what you’re telling them.
• Repetition - Sometimes just the repetition of a key phrase or image, with extensions of an image
and thought for each repetition, can help a writer generate exciting poems.
• Rhyme – Rhyming can enrich your poems and performance if used with skill, surprise and
moderation.
• Attitude – “No attitude, no poem!” Feelings and opinions are the “stuff” poetry is made of – Each
poet has a unique perspective and view of the world that no one else has. It is important that a spoken
word poem embodies the courage necessary to share one’s self with the rest of the world.
• Persona – Spoken word poetry allows you to be anyone you want to be. You can write a poem in
the “voice” of someone or something other than yourself or with a personality trait that is different
from your own.
• Performance
• Remember, spoken word poems are written to be performed. After your poem is written, practice
performing the poem with the elements of good stage presence in mind...
• Posture – Stand up straight, shoulders back, chin up, head held high. If you approach the stage with
your head hung low and your shoulders slumped, the audience won’t be interested in listening to you.
• Eye Contact – Don’t stare at the floor, or hide behind whatever it is that your reading from whether
it’s a book or a piece of paper. From time to time, look into the eyes of the different people in the
audience to hold their attention.
• Projection – Speak loudly and clearly so that your voice can be heard from a distance.
• Enunciation – Don’t mumble. Speak clearly and distinctly so that the audience can understand what
you are saying.
• Facial Expressions – Smile if you’re reading something happy. Don’t smile if you are reading
something serious. Use the appropriate facial expressions for the various emotions expressed in the
poem.
• Gestures – Use hand motions and body movements to emphasize different elements of your
performance. However, don’t rock back and forth or wave your hands about carelessly or the audience
will become distracted.

• Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Create Genre:
Writing the poem:
1. Find something you are passionate about or feel the need to express. Topics can range along a
broad spectrum (love, politics, personal experiences, religion etc…)
2. Begin to write the thoughts you want to be displayed out on paper.
3. Once you know what you want to express and have written your thoughts on paper, begin to mold
it into stanzas. A stanza can be defined as two or more lines that together form one of the divisions of a
poem.
4. As you form your stanzas keep in mind that stanzas usually are similar in length and follow the
same pattern of meter and rhyme.
5. The poem can be as long or short as you wish. You may use relatively any kind of grammar you
wish. * Note-this is your poem and your expressions so therefore it is up to you as to how you want it to
be written as long as it flows and is not too wordy.
6. Write you poem so that it will have a great flow and rhythm when it is performed.

• For those who really don't know much about computers, HTML is Hyper Text Markup Language, the
markup with which web pages are created. At its simplest it consists of a number of tags which tell
your computer how to display the text on a web page. For example, if I wrote "Hallo!" in a web page
and marked it up like this - "<h1>Hallo!</h1>" - your computer, when it opened the page, would
