Hydraulic Torque Converter Overview

The document discusses the construction and working of a hydraulic torque converter, which uses fluid dynamics to transfer power from an engine to a transmission, multiplying torque through three main components: an impeller, turbine, and stator. It also outlines the advantages of high efficiency and power transfer but disadvantages of high cost and weight for the torque converter.

INTRODUCTION

• SINCE its introduction in the 1940s, the torque converter

has been used as a key component between the engine
and the automatic transmission. It is a hydrodynamic
device used to transmit rotating mechanical power. .A
torque converter has three major components: the
impeller, the turbine and the stator. The hydraulic
fluid in the converter transfers the torque from the
impeller to the turbine which then sends it to the
differentials. The torque converter also multiplies the
torque transmitted and dampens fluctuation of the engine

INTRODUCTION
• Improved starting method for starting Generator.
Especially a generator driven by a single shaft gas
turbine machine, such as used in Cogent plants.
Improved starting method for starting compressors.
Especially, if the compressor is driven by a single
shaft gas turbine machine (used in liquefied natural
gas plants).
FIGURE - This cutaway view of a four-
element torque converter shows the
relationship of the internal parts.
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

• Most torque converters have four major elements: an

impeller, turbine, stator, and converter clutch. The
flexplate connects the converter to the crankshaft.
The pilot of the converter fits the end of the
crankshaft to center the converter to the crankshaft. A
torque converter is a hydrodynamic unit. It transfers
power through the dynamic motion of the fluid. Most
other hydraulic units transfer power through the static
pressure of the fluid. The fluid flow from the turbine
is turned to the same direction as the impeller by the
stator vanes.
• .
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

• As the pump spins, the fluid is flung to the outside and

creating Vacuum which draws more fluid at the centre. The
fluid then enters the blades of the turbine from outside which
gave changes on the direction of the fluid before it exits
through the centre of the [Link] directional change of
fluid makes the turbine to spin. Since the fluid exits the
turbine moving an opposite direction of the pump. This is why
a stator is placed in between the turbine and the pump, just to
counter flow the output fluid flow out of the turbine.A torque
converter hydraulically connects the engine to an automatic
transmission and will multiply the engine torque under certain
conditions. A fluid coupling transfers power through fluid,
from one set of vanes to the other.
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING
• h developed in the impeller passage for a single stage
is given by:
h = v^2/g
where ,
h = static head developed, m
V= peripheral velocity of the impeller wheel or tip
speed, m/s
g = acceleration due to gravity, m/s^2
CONSTRUCTION AND WORKING

• The factors that affect torque converter stall are

converter diameter, angle of the vanes, and the
torque of the engine. Torque converter clutches are
used to mechanically connect the engine to the
transmission. During lock-up, torque converter
slippage will be eliminated and fuel mileage will
improve.
ADVANTAGES
 High peak efficiency.
 Small frontal area for given flow.
 Straight through flow, allowing high ram efficiency.
 Increased pressure rise due to increased number of
stages with negligible losses.
DISADVANTAGES
 Manufacturing is difficult.
 Cost is very high.
 Heavy weight.
 High starting power requirements
APPLICATIONS
• Air separation plants.
• Gas turbine power plants
• Fishing boats and commercial vehicles.
• Hoist Of All Nature
• In Internal Combustion Engines
• Hydraulic devices
• Jet-engine test facilities
CONCLUTION

• The working principle of the torque converter along

with the recent studies conducted around the world
has been theoretically studied in this investigation.
The properties of the fluid inside the torque converter
have also been gone through. Finally, the optimized
values of the properties of the hydraulic fluid inside
the torque converter have been obtained.
