Understanding the Internet's Evolution

The internet is a worldwide network connecting millions of computers through dedicated routers and servers. When connected to the internet, end-users can send and receive different types of information electronically, such as email, text/video chats, computer programs. Most companies now function as internet service providers, transmitting data through high-speed fiber optic cables. As of 2018, over 4 billion people worldwide connect to the internet for various reasons. The internet has evolved significantly from its origins as a specialized network for the US Department of Defense, but still functions in basically the same way, connecting thousands of networks and billions of users globally.
