Understanding Business Research Essentials

Here are two situations that could justify choosing an external researcher: 1. The research topic requires specialized expertise. If the research problem is highly technical in nature and requires skills/knowledge not available among internal researchers, it may be better to hire an external researcher with relevant experience and qualifications. 2. An external perspective could provide more objective insights. There may be political or organizational dynamics influencing internal researchers that could bias their findings. An external party without preexisting relationships may be able to examine the problem more impartially.

What is Research?
• Research is something we all do in various capacities.

• We analyze a problem in hand and come up with a conclusion or workable solution to address
the issue.

• Research is simply the processes undertaken to find solutions to problems which we are facing.

• The word problem does not necessarily mean that there is an issue at hand. A problem here is
used to indicate that there is a phenomenon which is worthy of attention for analysis.

• A series of steps carried out in an organized, inquisitive and critical manner in order to
investigate a phenomenon.
Reasons for conducting a research
• Problem solving
• Improvement
• Exploration

What is Business Research?
• Business Research builds knowledge or solves business-related problems or
issues and assists in effective decision-making.

• Business research is step-by-step activity carried out in a critical, organized,

logical and systematic manner to analyze a problem or issue and find effective
ways to mitigate the problem faced at work.

• Business research is all about carrying out research within the organizational
setting. Hence, the activity of research is still the same, however, the context is
confined to organizations, their stakeholders, their processes or their customers.
Why is Business Research Necessary?
• Organizations can be faced with a multitude of problems ranging from
financial, operational, strategic, customers and employee-related.

• Business research is a mechanism to gather data or information,

understand the issues at hand and derive logical solutions that can
mitigate problems.
How Does Business Research Help Managers in
Effective Decision Making?
• When investigations into an issue are carried out in a critical, organized
and systematic manner, the solutions proposed will help decision-makers
make informed decisions.

Let say you are the General Manager of Cyntoq Corp. Your company
face some problems and need to conduct a research to find a solution.
As a manager in that company, you need to choose either to use the
internal or external researcher to conduct the research. If you decide to
hire external researcher, please provide TWO (2) situations that justify
the decision on choosing External Researcher to conduct the research
instead of using the company’s internal researcher.

Ethics and Business Research
• Research is conducted morally without compromising the rights of
any parties (especially the respondents of the research).

• The researcher has to exhibit and practice good conduct throughout

the research endeavor.

Common questions

External researchers might face challenges such as taking time to understand the organization's culture and processes, difficulties in achieving rapport and cooperation from staff, and limited availability for the implementation and evaluation of their research recommendations .

Internal researchers might be less valued as 'experts' by their colleagues because of their proximity and familiarity with the everyday workings and politics of the organization. This closeness can sometimes lead to a perception of bias or lack of new perspectives that external researchers may offer due to their broader, more varied experiences and independent standing .

Researchers must ensure they conduct research morally, without compromising the rights of any parties, especially research respondents. They must maintain confidentiality, obtain informed consent, avoid conflicts of interest, and ensure transparency and honesty in data collection and analysis. These considerations help maintain the integrity and credibility of the research process .

Internal research benefits from a researcher's pre-existing organizational knowledge by providing context and understanding to the research process, facilitating smoother data collection, implementation, and evaluation of recommendations. This insider knowledge aids faster integration of suggestions within the organization's framework .

Business research plays a crucial role in improving organizational processes and outcomes by systematically analyzing problems, providing insights, and suggesting effective solutions. It enables the identification of inefficiencies, offers ways to enhance operational and strategic performance, and supports informed decision-making, resulting in improved overall performance .

The primary purposes for conducting research in a business context are problem-solving, improvement, exploration, and adding new knowledge . Business research specifically assists in building knowledge or solving business-related problems, aiding in effective decision-making by understanding issues and deriving logical solutions .

Hiring an external researcher is advantageous when fresh ideas are needed and power politics within the organization could prevent unbiased findings. External researchers can provide a broader perspective due to their experience with different organizations and may possess specific technical expertise not available internally .

Business research aids managers in making effective decisions by providing insights into issues through critical, organized, and systematic investigations. This process ensures that decision-makers are well-informed, leading to solutions that mitigate problems effectively .

Ethics is crucial in business research to ensure that no rights, especially of research respondents, are compromised. Researchers must practice good conduct, act morally throughout the research, and maintain integrity and ethical standards to uphold the credibility of their findings and protect participants .

Internal researchers have better acceptance from staff and possess knowledge about the organization, which facilitates the implementation and evaluation of recommendations. In contrast, external researchers bring divergent and convergent thinking, experience from varied situations, and typically have better technical training. However, internal researchers may suffer from power politics and a lack of fresh ideas, while external researchers face challenges in understanding the organization quickly and might not be available for implementing solutions .
