• SAIL was set up on January 24, 1973 as Hindustan
Steel Private Limited.
• In 1978 it was restructured as an operating company
as Steel Authority of India Limited.
• It is India’s largest steel producing company. With a
turnover more than 1 Lakh Crore.
• It is among the ten Maharatna’s of the country’s
Central Public Sector Enterprises.
