Understanding Captions and Their Functions

Captions provide a brief description or explanation of an image, object, or scene. They should be succinct yet informative. Captions can consist of a title, identification of people or objects, and key details about who, what, when, where. There are different types of captions including identification bars, cutlines, summaries, and those that include expanded details or quotes. Captions serve to clarify meaning and prevent misinterpretation, given an image on its own may not provide full context.
