Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007. He was born in 1931 in Rameswaram, India to a poor family and had to work to support his family from a young age. Despite challenges, he had a strong desire to learn and become a fighter pilot. He went on to have a successful career as a scientist working on missile and nuclear weapons development in India. As president, he was popular among the people and committed to science and technology. He collapsed while giving a lecture in 2015 and passed away from cardiac arrest.

He never accepted gifts other than books.


AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

• Dr. Kalam was awarded with the prestigious ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1997,
‘Padma Vibhushan’ in 1990, and ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 1981 from the
government of India.
• In 1997, the government of India awarded him ‘Indira Gandhi Award for
National Integration’.
• In 2000, he was bestowed with ‘Ramanujan Award’.
• In 2007, he received ‘Kings Charles II medal’ from the Royal Society.
• He received the ‘Hoover Medal’ by the ASME Foundation, USA.
• The United Nations recognized Kalam’s 79th birthday as World Students’
Day.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM LEADERSHIP OF DR.
KALAM
• A leader must have a vision
• A leader must travel towards an unexplored path
• He must know how to manage success and most importantly the failures
• Leader must have courage to take decisions
• A leader must have nobility in Management
• Every action of the leader should be transparent, leader must work with integrity and
succeed with integrity
DEATH

• Dr. Kalam collapsed while delivering a lecture at Indian Institute of Management (IIM)
Shillong.
• He was taken immediately to the nearest hospital in a critical condition. He was kept in
the intensive care unit but failed to show signs of life.
• He was declared dead on July 27, 2015 due to cardiac arrest.
• The former president of India was laid to rest with full state honors at his hometown,
Rameshwaram.
