Library Databases
• A library database is usually an online collection of
academic journals
• Use journal databases when doing a topic search
and you don’t yet know what articles are out there,
e.g. when you don’t have a reading list
• We also have databases of company information
and economic & financial data
• What databases are you familiar with?

• No single database will have
everything you need
• With a lot of databases, we
don’t have access to
everything on it (You can
check the A-Z of Journals
for confirmation)
• Not all DBs host full-text
articles (abstracts only)
Searching DBs: tips & tricks
• Think of variations of your search terms. Include:
– Synonms (spam, junk email)
– Acronyms (united nations, UN)
– Plurals (manager, managers)

Subject Terms
• Most databases index
their content with subject
terms (or equivalent)
• You can find the correct
subject terms by
– Checking its
thesaurus (if it has
one)
– Checking the subject
terms in individual
papers
• By default, most DBs search all fields (title, author,
subject terms, abstract etc.)

• If a term is used in
the thesaurus, or
in articles’ subject
terms, try being
searching by
subject terms
• This should capture
all variations of a
term

• If a DB doesn’t use the search term you want:
– You can also search for all variations of a term by
linking them with OR
– twitter OR microblogging OR tweet OR tweets

• Search for two different topics together buy linking
with AND
• Example: I’m looking for papers on “the use of RFID
in supply chains”:

• You can even use AND and OR together:
• Example:
– (Irish OR Ireland) AND banking crisis
• Important to keep OR separate from AND: either in
(brackets) or in a separate search box
