PROJECT TYPES
COLLECTION PROJECTS – require students to collect
materials or physical objects in order to categorize or
interrelate them.
INFORMATIONAL PROJECTS – require extensive
amounts of reading or library research to obtain
information about a wide range of topics
ORIENTATION PROJECTS – require extensive research,
but their main purpose is to orient people to a new place
SOCIAL WELFARE PROJECTS – are designed to serve the
needs of audiences other than the students themselves
ADVANTAGES OF PROJECT
WORK
INCREASED MOTIVATION – learners become
personally involved in the project
ALL FOUR SKILLS are integrated
AUTONOMOUS LEARNING is promoted as learners
become more responsible for their own learning
THERE ARE LEARNING OUTCOMES – learners have
an end product
AUTHENTIC TASKS and therefore the language
input are more authentic
ORGANISZING A PROJECT
INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS are developed through
working as a group
CONTENT AND METHODOLOGY can be decided by
the learners and the teacher so it is more learner
controlled
LEARNERS OFTEN GET HELP FROM PARENTS thus
involving the parent more in the child’s learning
A BREAK FROM THE ROUTINE and the chance to do
something different
A CONTEXT IS ESTABLISHED which balances the
need for fluency and accuracy
POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS TO PROJECT WORK
LEARNERS USING THEIR OWN LANGUAGE – so
the teacher has to decide whether the benefits of
doing project work outweigh this factor
SOME LEARNERS DOING NOTHING – if the project
is planned carefully and roles decided at the proposal
stage this is less likely to happen
GROUPS WORKING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS – one
group may have finished the project after a couple of
hours and say they have nothing to do
The process of devising a project implies lots
of revision, learning from others and
from the materials which are used.
Acquisition takes place, as does self- and
peer correction and evaluation and the
use of all skills in order to produce a
piece of work to be presented to the
whole class.
