Dielectric Properties of Textile Materials

The document discusses the dielectric properties of textile materials. It defines dielectric properties as being due to polarization in a material when an electric field is applied, which induces charges and affects capacitance. Dielectric constant is also called relative permittivity and describes a material's interaction with an electric field. The dielectric constant of a material can be defined based on the capacitance of a capacitor or the force between charges. Factors like frequency, moisture, and temperature affect the dielectric properties and their measurement in textiles.

DEFINE DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES?

 Dielectric effects are due to polarization in the medium.

This gives rise to a reverse field, which reduces the
force between two charges and reduces the potential
difference between the charged plates of a condenser,
which thus increases its capacitance. A dielectric
substance is that which does not allow the electricity to
pass through them but on applying the electric field,
induced charges are produced on its faces.

Capacitance: Capacitance is the ability of a body to
store an electrical charge. A common form of energy
storage device is a parallel plate capacitor. If the charges
on plates are –q and +q, v gives the voltage between the
plates, then the capacitance, C= Q/V

DIELECTRIC CONSTANT:

Permittivity is also termed as the dielectric constant, describes the

interaction of material with an electric field. The dielectric constant is

equivalent to relative permittivity or the absolute permittivity relative to the

permittivity of free space.

 o  8.854 X 10 farad / meter

 For many purposes, it is more convenient to use the relative permittivity

which is also called dielectric constant.

Permittivity of material
Relative permittivity =
Permittivity of Vacuum

The Di-electric Constant ( or Permittivity) of a medium may be defined in
two ways – either in terms of forces between two electric charges

Di-electric constant

€ = force between two charges in a vaccum

force between same two charges in the medium

In terms of the capacity of a condenser

Di-electric constant

€ = Capacity of a condenser in a medium

Capacity of a condenser in the vaccum

DIELECTRIC CONSTANT:

The permittivity € of a material may be defined either in terms of the

capacitance ,C of a condenser with the material between parallel plates of area
A distance between them is d,

cd
€= A
Or in terms of force F Between charges Q1 and Q2 at a distance r in the material.

MEASUREMENT OF DIELECTRIC
PROPERTIES TEXTILE MATERIAL:

 To measure the dielectric properties, the textile material must

be placed between the plates of a condenser & the impedance
is measured.
 Measurement of impedance :
 [Link] method.
 [Link] method.

13
APPLICATION OF DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES IN TEXTILES:

1. To measure the moisture content of textiles.

2. To measure the evenness of sliver, roving & yarn.
3. To detect impurities within fibrous mass.
4. For dielectric heating of textiles.
5. Sensor type application of textiles.

14
FACTORS AFFECTING THE MEASUREMENT
OF DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES:

[Link] of Frequency
[Link] of moisture
[Link] of temperature

15
 Effect of moisture : Hearle has measured the effect of
moisture content on dielectric properties of cotton , viscose and
many other fibers and found that the permittivity increase with
the increases of moisture content. This is due the polar nature
of water molecule, the release of polar groups in the fiber
molecule.

 Effect of frequency : The time that is taken by the dipoles to

change the direction is called relaxation time.

16
 At low frequency , the dipoles can not reverse their direction
within the relaxation time, so permittivity becomes high.
 At high frequency, the vice versa.
Effect of temperature :
In case of solid materials, if the temperature is increased, the
permittivity of material will increase because of reducing the
restraints on the dipoles.
