Understanding Double Wishbone Suspension

The document discusses different types of car suspension systems. It provides a brief history of suspension development from ox-drawn carts to modern systems. The main types covered are double wishbone, McPherson strut, and multi-link suspensions. Double wishbone suspension is explained in more detail, noting its vertical upper and lower control arms provide good wheel path control and vehicle stability. The advantages of double wishbone include vertical control arms and stability, while the main disadvantage is greater complexity and cost compared to other systems.

Introduction

• Suspension is the system of

tires, springs, shock absorbers
and linkages that connects a
vehicle to its wheels and allows
relative motion.
History
•An early form of suspension on ox-drawn carts had the platform
swing on iron chains attached to the wheeled frame of the
carriage.
•By approximately 1750, leaf springs began appearing on certain
types of carriage, such as the Landau.

•By the middle of the 19th century,Elliptical springs might
additionally start to be used on carriages.
Functions of suspension system:

1. It reduce the road shocks on vehicle body

2. It gives stability to the vehicle.
3. It gives the good road holding while
driving, cornering and braking.
4. It provides comfort.
5- keeps the wheels in contact with the
ground

We will talk about Double wishbone
suspension

The reason why we call this type of

setup “double wishbone” is due to
the shape of the control arms that
look like wishbones. Alternatively,
these are also known as “A” control
arms.
