Question 2.
How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
tasks?
By Aimie Condon
I tried to link my main product of the Kings of Leon music video
with my ancillary tasks which were my digipack and magazine
advert as much as I could as when researching other artists,
such as Florence and the machine, this is what I found was used
in most cases. For Florence and the machines “Lungs” album
release, the magazine advert and digipack used a very similar
format with the same font, same photo of the artist and same
colour scheme.
Magazine Digipack
advert
The reason for this link between the main product, digipack and
magazine advert is so that when the audience see the advert or
the music video, they will remember aspects of it and then
recognise it when in a shop and they will easily be able to find
the digipack to be able to purchase it. Another reason for this
link is so that the theme of the song is consistent and this may
mean that the audience understand the song more or are able
to relate to it in a more visual way. A final reason that I think the
link is important is because it gives the artist a trademark image
that the audience and fans will be able to associate them with.
This can be seen again with Florence and the machine as her
official website is also in the same style as the digipack and
advert for “Lungs”.
My digipack, magazine advert and main music video production has a
theme running through all of them as I tried to make the blue bass
guitar from the video the main focus of all 3 things. I chose the bass
guitar because I think it has a great significance in the actual video and
I also think it is a good symbolic code to represent the rock genre. A
bass guitar in the rock genre can represent rebellion and tear away
behaviour that is usually associated with bands from that genre. The
stop motion from the video involving the guitar is also one of my
favourite parts of the video and is also one of other peoples favourite
parts as I found when conducting audience feedback, so I thought it
would be a good part to use as the bands trademark symbol. Within
the rock genre, the artist is rarely featured on the digipack or adverts
so this is another reason why I chose the guitar rather than a photo of
the band.
On my digipack I also linked in other
aspects of the music video as well
including a print screen from the video
of the drums and of Tom singing. On
the photo of Tom singing I also
included a lipstick kiss mark as this is
something that featured in the video
on the guitar. I also made my digipack
half black and white and half colour as
this again ties in my video as the
performance parts of the video are in
black and white and the narrative is in
colour. I also, however, added in
something new that did not feature in
the music video which was the mosaic
background that the guitar is on. I
decided to add this in because the
digipack is for a album not a single so it
would have to relate to some other
songs on the album as well as the one
that we made a video for.
A final thing that I did to link my Front
digipack with my magazine advert cover of
digipack
was choose the font that fitted best
with the genre and video and then
used it on both the digipack and
advert. I searched through the
website [Link] to find the
best fitting and appropriate font and
then once I found “Sketchy” I
decided that would be the one to
look best with my ancillary tasks. I
used it on my digipack to write the
bands name on the front cover and Track list on back of digipack
also the track list on the back. On my
magazine advert I used it to write
the bands name and then also all of
the information including the
release date and what magazines
had rated the album. Release date on magazine
advert
After asking some of friends and family what they thought
of my ancillary tasks in context with my music video
production, I got some very positive feedback where they
said that they thought they all tied together well and gave
the band a symbolic trademark image of the blue bass
guitar. They said that all 3 aspects of the production look
professional and well edited and all look effective when
put together.
