Characteristics of Vertebrates vs. Invertebrates

This document describes and compares vertebrates and invertebrates. Vertebrates are animals that have backbones and are classified into five classes: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Invertebrates do not have backbones and make up over 90% of animal species on Earth, having soft bodies without an internal skeleton. The document provides examples of types of vertebrates and invertebrates.

VERTEBRATES

AND
INVERTEBRATES
Different animals share our planet with
us. Many are alike and many are
different. We classify them based on their
characteristics, their similarities and
dissimilarities. And this topic we should
be able to describe the characteristics of
vertebrates and invertebrates.
Vertebrates
Animals that have backbones are
called vertebrates. The
vertebrates are classified into
five classes; namely, mammals,
birds, fish, reptiles, and
amphibians.
• Mammals does not lay eggs instead it gives births
to their young. Example: dolphin, lion, and
elephant

• Birds lay eggs and have feather as their covering

• Fish lives in water and have gills for breathing
underwater.
• Reptiles also lays egg but their body is covered with scales or plates.
Example: crocodile, snake, and turtle

• Amphibians are cold-blooded animals and are characterized by their

ability to live both aquatic and land habitats. Example: toad, frog,
and newt
Invertebrates
Invertebrates are animals that
don't have a backbone. Over 90%
of all species on Earth are
invertebrates. Invertebrates
have soft bodies because they
don't have an internal skeleton
for support.
Types of Invertebrates
• Protozoans - single-celled organisms such as amoebas and
paramecia

• Annelids- earthworms, leeches

• Echinoderms - starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers

• Mollusks - snails, octopus, squid, clams

• Arthropods- spiders, shrimp, crabs
