GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES
The environment is the environment in which we
develop our lives. We have all heard about the serious
deterioration that the Earth is suffering and we also
suffer the consequences: pollution, water restrictions,
scarcity of resources, loss of biodiversity and loss of
quality of life.
Faced with this situation, we must assume our
responsibility and know the possibilities we have to
protect and take care of it from our School and thus,
achieve sustainable development and a better planet
for all.
What are Good Housekeeping Practices?
Good Housekeeping Practices are simple and useful
measures that the Educational Community can adopt in
order to reduce the negative environmental impact of our
activities.
These are actions that involve changes in everyone's
behavior and habits to reduce environmental risks,
promote resource savings and sustainable management of
our activities.
To ensure that these practices are successful and achieve
real change, it is imperative that we all collaborate and
get involved.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Responsible consumption of resources.
In our College we use a large amount of
resources; both water and energy, as well as
paper and office supplies.
Optimizing our consumption will help reduce
the negative environmental impact and
mitigate the pressure that nature supports due
to the high consumption of natural resources
and pollution, without forgetting the
generation of waste that this entails.
Measures to save water
Water is an increasingly scarce resource. In addition to wasting it as if it
would never end, it also receives mismanagement, such as pollution.
Therefore, it is necessary to establish simple and practical measures, such
as:
-Close the taps when we don't need them, so as not to waste.
-Notify the maintenance service if there is a breakdown, to avoid leaks (a
tap that loses one drop per second, causes a waste of 30 liters of water a
day and a broken cistern, can use 150 liters of water a day).
-To be clean you don't have to be wasteful. The toilet will not be used as a
garbage can.
-To irrigate the College's gardens, an attempt will be made to apply
localized irrigation techniques, such as dripping or micro
-sprinkling, which consume less water than the traditional hose irrigation
system.
Rational energy consumption.
Excessive energy consumption pollutes the
environment and this contributes to increasing global
environmental problems such as the greenhouse effect.
Therefore, we must become aware that with small daily
measures, we can do a lot for our environment:
-Using LED bulbs (Light Emitting Diode): They represent
considerable energy savings.
- Turn off the lights in the classrooms, laboratories and, in
general, in all areas of the School when they are not being
used or when leaving them, in order to save electricity and
electricity costs.
Reduction in paper consumption.
Paper is one of the resources we use the most in our
educational activities. The excessive use of paper implies cutting
down many trees. This phenomenon, known as deforestation,
in turn contributes to one of the great current environmental
problems such as desertification.
It is very important that we adopt measures to enhance the
value of paper:
-Reducing consumption and not wasting paper is the best
measure we can apply.

-Let's not forget that paper can be reused and that we should
not use it for abandonment without first taking advantage of its
two sides.
Management of waste generated.
We are aware of the large amount of garbage
that we produce daily and the environmental
impacts that we suffer from that large volume.
With our management model, through the
separation of waste by its nature and use in the
different containers (paper and cardboard; plastics
and light packaging; organic matter)
This implies that we must be aware of the use
that is given to the bins and that they are used
correctly inside the houses.
Let us remember the recovery techniques for Urban
Solid Waste (MSW):
- Reduce:
It is considered the most important "r". It is much more
profitable not to produce the waste than to have it to
manage. We must try to reduce the volume of the
products we consume. Many times we buy things that
are not necessary, just for the desire to buy. We do not
think that its manufacture requires raw materials that
we cannot waste such as oil or water. We must also take
into account the enormous amount of garbage that is
generated by excess packaging in many things that we
buy. So, reduce ..
- Re-use: Use and throw away, that's the
problem. Things everyonce have a shorter life.
Extending it so that objects take longer to
become waste is a good solution. We can reuse
water, glass, clothes, toys.
-Recycle: Waste is not a hindrance. They are a
resourcethat we can reuse converted to other
objects. We can recycle many glass, plastic, etc.
containers. For example, an empty plastic bottle
can become a good planter.
- Repair: You can not miss this "erre". Its
meaning is related to the fact that there is
nothing old enough anddamaged, that cannot be
repaired for another purpose.
- Regular: For all of the above to make sense,
there needs to be a regulation of waste
management andof design processes. It proceeds
in such a way that, on a daily basis, the people
at home participate in this daily habit.
Conservation of natural spaces and
biodiversity.
Among them, we find a rich diversity of
species,among which are: shrubs; fruit trees;
arboreal, both deciduous and evergreen; conifers and
herbaceous.
Through the design of ecological routes, the
students can observe more closely the seasonal
changes, the different kinds of leaves, fruits and
flowers and even the fauna that these spaces
harbor.
Care of green areas
There are several measures that we can adopt for
the protection and care of these spaces of vital
importance for our quality of life:
-Take care of the plants avoiding that they are
victims of our footsteps.
-Keep green and common spaces clean.
-Water at dawn or at dusk, since there is less
evaporation and the plants absorb and retain the
supplied water better.
-In the less hot season, such as autumn and
winter, it is better not to water excessively
