I wrote 5 different numbers on 5 cards. The sum of the
numbers is 15. What numbers did I put on the cards?
Step 1: Understanding the Problem
· How many numbers did I write? - (5)
· What is the sum of the numbers?- (15)
· How many numbers on each card? - (1)
· Are any of the numbers are the same? - (No, they are all different.)
Step 2 : Planning a Solution
Could 1 of the numbers be 15? (No, because the rest would be 0 and we said that all the
numbers were different.)
Select 5 numbers and check to see if their sum is 15.
Finding the Answer
Carry out the plan of the first strategy
Step 3: Guess and Check
Try 0,1,2,3,4—0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10 (too little)
Try 1,2,3,4,5—1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15 (correct)

The numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Second strategy
Find the answer by using the process draw a picture/
diagram. There are 5 numbers on 5 cards. The sum of
the numbers is 15. What is the number on the cards.
Possibility by using this process we can see it more
clearly.
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 6 = 16
2+ 3 + 4 +5 +6 = 20
1 + 2 +3 +4 +5 = 15
Step 4: Looking back check
By using the guest and check method , check the
answer;
1,2,3,4,5 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15
Suggested strategy
The most efficient strategy to get the answer of this
question is the second strategy.
The second strategy is using draw a picture or diagram
then try all the possible number to get the answer.
First, ,1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15,
This strategy is efficient because we can find the
answer quickly. The step is also easier and we can see it
clearly. We just draw a diagram and check all the
possibilities number to get the answer, which is 15.
