Personal Relationship
What is Personal Relationship?
Personal relationship is the type of relationship which is closely
associated with a person and which can only have meaning to this
person.
“A healthy relationship with friends is a source of lifetime
happiness.”
Researchers have found that relationships are essential to one’s
happiness, while absences of close relationships can produce a
profound negative effect on an individual.
How are Attachments Developed?
Secure Attachment – when primary caregiver is most of the time
present and available and when all the emotional needs of an infant
are met.
Avoidant Attachment – when primary caregiver is cold and
detached, and even unresponsive to a child’s needs.
Anxious-Ambivalent Attachment – when the primary caregivers is
not consistent in terms of presence and in meeting a child’s
emotional needs.
What Drives Attraction?
Attraction is the first stage in a continuum of stages that lead to
intimacy and commitment.
Helen Fisher of Rutgers University in New Jersey, proposed that
there are three stages of falling in love:
1. Lust – is driven by the sex hormones.
2. Attraction – defined as the lovestruck phase. It involves
neurotransmitters in the brain such as dopamine, norepinephrine and
serotonin.
3. Attachment – when the couple in love decided to continue with the
relationship. Special hormones are secreted during this stage,
Oxytocin and Vasopressin.
The Rozenberg Quarterly mentions several theories and research
results related to attraction and liking. These are:
Transference Effect – people in the past, or bad experiences
Propinquity Effect – sense of familiarity
Similarity
Reciprocity
Physical Attractiveness

Love and Intimacy
Intimacy – a lovely moment when someone understands and
validates us.
“It is an absolute human certainty that no one can know his own beauty or
perceive a sense of his own worth until it has been reflected back to him in the
mirror of another loving, caring human being.”
Commitment – an act of deciding to consistently fulfill and live by
agreements made with another person, entity, or cause, and where
the values of integrity and respect serve as a guide to one’s behavior
and thinking.
Passion – the intense state of being that drives and consumes a
person to pursue an interest, a vision, or a person.
