Allowable Compressive Stress in Columns

This document discusses allowable compressive stresses for wood members according to the NSCP 2015 standards. It covers stresses parallel and perpendicular to the grain, and includes adjustments for buckling based on the slenderness ratio (Le/d). A sample problem is provided to calculate the allowable compressive load for an Apitong column with given dimensions and properties. Formulas shown include calculations for actual compressive stress, buckling coefficient K, and determining short, intermediate or long column behavior.

CONSIDERING LATERAL STABILITY

Le/d, or the buckling factor is the determining factor for this adjustment. This is applied
to all members subjected to compressive force.

Where:
Le = effective length of the member
d = depth of the member
b = width of the member
Ke = buckling length coefficient depending on
support of members as shown on

PROBLEMS

A timber column of square cross section has a length of 3m. And a dimension of 140mm x 140mm. It
is hinged at the ends so that K = 1.0. Investigate the beam by determining the allowable compressive
stress an Apitong (80%) grade column member could carry.

Solutions:

Properties of Apitong:

Fcl = 9.56 Mpa

E = 7310 Mpa

Lu = 3000mm
d = 140mm
PROBLEMS

Solutions:

Step
  1: Determine Le/d
Le = Ke/d = = 21.43

Since 21.43 > 11, then it is not short so check K

Step
  2: Determine K
= 18.55

Since Le/d > K, then it is a long column

Step
  3: Determine K

PROBLEMS

Solutions:

Step
  4: Determine now the allowable load P.
Fc’ = Fc (actual)

Fc (actual) =

So,

P = 93688 N or 93.69 kN

Therefore, the 80% Apitong given dimension as

follows can carry 93.56 kN of compressive force,
