Overview of Robotics and Smart Sensors

This document discusses robotics and smart sensors. It begins with defining robots as programmable machines with sensors and actuators. It then covers the history of robots, why they are used, types of robots including industrial robots, transporters, and servants/toys. The document also discusses smart sensors, how they integrate electronics and can perform logic functions and communication. It describes the architecture of smart sensors and how applications are enhanced with self-calibration and communication. Examples of robot and smart sensor applications are given in industries like medical, education, nuclear power, and more.

Introduction
Robotics:
Robotics is a branch of technology that deals with the
design construction operation structural disposition,
manufacture & applications of robot.

Robot:
Robots are programmable, physical machines that
have sensors & Actuators.

Robot Ethics

0th) A robot may not harm humanity, or, by

Asimov’s inaction, allow humanity to come to
Three^H^H^H^H^H harm.
Four Laws: 1st) A robot may not injure a human being
or, through inaction, allow a human
being to come to harm.
2nd) A robot must obey orders given it by
human beings except where such
orders would conflict with the First
Law.
3rd) A robot must protect its own existence
as long as such protection does not
conflict with the First or Second Law.

Types of Robots
1. Hard working Robots:
- Melon harvester Robot
- Ore transport Robot for mines
- Removing of paints from large ships
- Generation of high precision sewer maps
2. Transporters:
- Container transporters
- Medication & food transport
Continued……
3. Insensible Steel Giants:
- To clean Nuclear waste
- To clean Ammunition & mines

4. Servants & Toys

Smart Sensors
 Definition:
Smart sensors are sensors with
integrated electronics that can
perform one or more of the function logic
functions, two-way communication, make
decisions.

 What the SMART SENSOR can do ?

Si Tech. in Smart Sensors
 A smart sensor utilizes the transduction
properties of one class of materials and
electronic properties of silicon (GA As).
 A transduction element either includes thin
metal films, zinc oxide and polymeric films.
 Integrated sensors provide significant
advantages in terms of overall size and the
ability to use small signals from the
transduction element.
ARCHITECTURE OF SMART
SENSOR
Enhancement of Appl.
 Self calibration:
It means adjusting some parameters of
sensors during fabrication.
 Computation:
It allows one to obtain avg., variance &
std. deviation for the set of measurements.
 Communication
 Multi sensing
Advantages
 Revolution in medical science & Health care
systems
 New and wide scope in education and
training
 A good help in Nuclear industry
 Used tremendously in sport activities
 Play the role of an efficient assistance in
research and development sciences
 Can very well handle household business
Applications
 Robotic Applications
1. Parts handling
2. Assembly
3. Painting
4. Surveillance
5. Security(Bomb disposal..really telecherics
rather than robotics)
6. Home help(grass cutting, nursing)
Continued……
 Smart Sensors Applications
1. Measurement Validation
2. Adaptive sensors
3. Auto Calibration Maintenance
