Sample Size Calculation Guide

The learning objectives are to determine the formula for computing sample size, compute sample size using the length of an interval, and solve problems involving sample size determination. Sample size affects the accuracy of a confidence interval and should be large enough to narrow the interval. An incorrect sample size can lead to inaccurate findings and wasted resources. Formulas can be used to determine the minimum sample size needed when estimating a population mean or proportion. Examples are provided to illustrate how to calculate the required sample size.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the period, the students are expected

to:
✘determine the formula on how to compute
sample size;
✘compute an appropriate sample size using the
length of the interval; and
✘solve problems involving sample size
determination. 1
Sample Size
of a Confidence
Interval
Sample size is also one factor that affects the
accuracy of a confidence interval and it should be
made large enough in order to narrow down the
confidence interval. Also, in most researches that use
sample statistics to infer about the population, being
able to estimate the size of the sample necessary to
accomplish the purposes of the study is important.

3
Wrong sample size always lead to
inaccurate research findings and it would
mean wastage of time, effort, and money.
Several things such as level of confidence,
sampling error, and width of estimation
interval are closely tied to a valid sample
size.

Sample Size
when estimating population
mean
If represents the population standard error and
the maximum error of estimate, then the minimum
sample size when estimating the population mean is
determined by the formula:
The maximum error to estimate is simply the
difference between the true mean (population mean) and
the sample mean.
6
Example 1
The principal of an exclusive high school wants to
know the average annual income of his teachers. Based
on a previous study, it was determined that the
standard deviation of the salaries is 900php. How large
must sample principal should select if he wants to be
95% confident of finding whether the true mean
differs from the sample mean by 350php?
7
Conclusion
The principal needs to survey at least 25
teachers in order to be 95% sure that the
sample mean differs from the population mean
by 350php.

8
Example 2
Given the standard deviation, maximum error
of estimation, and confidence level. Determine
the sample size to estimate .

Sample Size
when estimating population
Proportion
Determining the sample size required to estimate
population proportion is also possible. It can be
determined by the formula

12
A national survey was conducted to determine the extent
to which employers are promoting health and fitness among
their employees. One of the questions asked was, “Does your
company offer on-site exercise classes?” Suppose it was
estimated before the study that no more 40% of the
companies would answer yes. How many companies would be
considered in estimating the population proportion to ensure
a 98% confidence if the true population proportion is 0.43?
13
Conclusion
Thus, a random sample of 1443
companies is required to maintain an error
of 0.03.
