Right Triangle Similarity Theorems

The document discusses the geometric mean and its properties, including that the geometric mean of two numbers is the square root of their product. It then explains the right triangle similarity theorem, which states that if an altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of a right triangle, the two new triangles formed are similar to the original and to each other. Several examples are provided to illustrate using the geometric mean and right triangle similarity theorem to find missing lengths in right triangles.

RIGHT-TRIANGLE SIMILARITY
THEOREM
If the altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of a
right triangle, then the two triangles formed are similar
to the original triangle and to each other.

COROLLARIES:
In a right triangle, the length of the
altitude from the right angle to the hypotenuse
is the geometric mean of the lengths of the
two segments of the hypotenuse.
If the altitude is drawn to the
hypotenuse of a right triangle, then each leg
of the triangle is the geometric mean of the
hypotenuse and the segment of the
hypotenuse adjacent to that leg.
