Die and Punch Assembly Overview

This document provides an overview of die and punch assembly presses. It begins by introducing presses and metal forming processes. It then classifies different types of manual and power presses. The document describes common press accessories and discusses press size, mechanical vs hydraulic presses, and press working terminology. It provides examples of different types of presses including fly presses, gap frame presses, hydraulic presses, and screw presses. In summary, the document classifies presses, describes their components, and provides examples of common press types used in metal forming processes.

Introduction

PRESS :
 “It is a machine by which we can do cutting and non cutting process by applying
force without removing chip on metallic or non-metallic sheet.

 Metal forming is on of the manufacturing processes which are almost chip less.
This operations are mainly carried out by the help of presses and press tools. This
operations include deformation of metal work pieces to the desired size and size
by applying pressure or force.
Classification
Manual Press
 Foot Press
 Arbor Press
 Fly Press
 Toggle Press

Power Press
 Crank Press
 Eccentric Press
 Cam Press
 Screw Press
 Rack and Pinion Press
 Hydraulic Press
 Pneumatic Press
Accessories of Common Press
1. Base
2. C-Frame
3. Ram
4. Crank Shaft
5. Clutch
6. Brake
Press Size
 The size of press is designed by its max capability of applying load on a piece of blank, and its expressed in tones.
 The bed area is also considered in the press area.

Mechanical
 Capacities to 6000 tons
 Force varies throughout the stroke
 Limited overload

Hydraulic
 50000+tons capabilities
 Large force available on the top of the stroke
 Overload protection
Press Working Terminology
Bed
 The lower part of press machine is called bed. It is like a table which bears all the load of press. It is stationery portion. Boister
plate is mounted on this part.

Boister Plate
 The part which is used to Mount the die assembly is called boister plate. It support the die block and locate it at right place.

Die Set
 It is an assembly which has two or more parts. It is Design according to the final product required. It is usually have one upper
part and one lower part.

Die Block
 This part has the cavity of required part.

Lower Shoe
 Die block is mounted on the lower Shoe and lower shoe is mounted on the boister plate. So basically it is the lower part of the
shoe.
Punch
 This part is fastened with the moving part Ram in the press. This is male part of die set which produce required
shape in the component with the use of pressure.

Upper Shoe
 The upper part of die set is called upper shoe.

Punch Plate
 The punch plate is one which uphold the punch. It is also called punch retainer.

Backup Plate
 This place is used to prevent the excessive pressure that damages the die. This place distributes the pressure in
a wide area of plate to decrease the intensity of pressure. Therefore it prevents the punch holder from crushing.

Stripper
 This is a plate used to hold the specimen on the die. It strip out the metal strip off the punches.
Types of Press

 Fly Press
 Gap Frame Press
 Hydraulic Press
 Screw Press
Fly Press
A fly press is a machine tool used to shape sheet metal by deforming it or cutting it with
punches and dies.
Gap Frame Press

A type of press with a C-Shaped frame suspending the crown over the bed and an
open portion in the front.
Hydraulic Press
A hydraulic press is a device using a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive
force. It uses the hydraulic equivalent of a mechanical lever.
Screw Press
A screw press is a type of machine press in which the ram is driven up and down by a
screw.
