Compression Member Design Using AISC

The document provides an example of selecting the lightest steel column section from the AISC column load table to support a given axial load. For a column that is 15 feet long with a dead load of 100 kips and live load of 120 kips, the required strength is calculated as 312 kips. From the column load table, the W8x35 section is selected since it has a design strength of 320 kips, adequate to support the 312 kips of load.

AISC Column Load Design of Compression Member

Table
Ques. A steel column of 15 ft length is connected
by a fixed-hinge joint. Select the lightest W8 section
for the column to carry dead load of 100 kip and live
load of 120 kip. Assume steel is A992. Use column
load table of AISC Manual.

Data K = 0.80 L = 15 ft
DL = 100 kip LL = 120 kip
Fy = 50 ksi

Solution
KL = 0.8×15 = 12 ft
Pu = 1.2DL + 1.6LL
= 1.2×100 + 1.6×120 = 312 kip
From Table 4-1, φc Pn values are listed for KL = 12.

Section φc Pn

W8×67 632
W8×58 545
W8×48 447
W8×40
W8×35 367
320 (←)

W8×31 283

The section W8×35 has capacity of 320 kip which is

adequate for the column to carry 312 kip

Ans. Select W8×35

Fy = 50 ksi
Solution
KL = 0.8×12 = 9.6 ft
Pu = 1.2DL + 1.6LL
= 1.2×100 + 1.6×120 = 312 kip
Since there is no row for KL = 9.6, an interpolation is
required between KL = 9 and KL = 10.

From Table 4-1, for W8×31, the KL are listed below.

KL φc Pn
9 333
10 317

333 − 317
φc Pn = 333 − 10 − 9 ×(9.6 − 9)
= 323.4 kip > Pu (312) O.K

Ans. Select W8×31
