BELVAC TRIMMER CC93
LOCATION OF TRIMMER MACHINE
OVERVIEW OF TRIMMER
WHAT IS TRIMMER?
i. Stand-alone machine operating from a
single drive motor.
ii. Attached to the Bodymaker and has
connection track work carrying cans
between the Bodymaker discharge and
trimmer infeed.
WHAT DOES THE TRIMMER DO?
i. Receives cans produced by the Bodymaker
and trims the can to the proper can height for
the next process.
PURPOSE OF THE TRIMMER
i. Trim the can body to its proper height after
the Bodymaker.
TRIMMER PROCESS
TRIMMER INFEED
 Cans feed from bodymaker discharge to
trimmer infeed for trimming.
i. Can infeed is start and stopped by the
trimmer can stop.
ii. Trimmer speed is controlled by infeed track
sensors.
iii. The trimmer infeed separates the cans for
loading onto the main turret shaft.
TRIMMER TRANSFER
 Transfers can from infeed starwheel to the
main turret shaft.
i. This is timed to prevent any damage to the
can.
ii. Transfer brushes are used to keep the can
remaining in the turret pocket.
iii. Positions the cans for loading onto the
vacuum chuck of the turret.
MAIN TURRET & VACUUM CHUCK
 Cans are positioned on the main turret to be
picked up by the vacuum chuck.
 The vacuum chuck:
i. Receives the dome end of the can.
ii. Rotates the can for trimming.
iii. Positioned by the spindle assembly for
trimming.
TRIM STATION & TRIMMER
CARTRIDGE
 The trimmer head uses rotating knives to trim
the can to height.

Belvac EMC Trimmer Cartridge

TRIMMER DISCHARGE
 Trimmed cans are discharged from the trimmer via
track work and sent to washer.
 Trimmed can are positioned by the vacuum chuck
for discharge,
 Timed vacuum releases the can from the vacuum
chuck.
 Trim scrap is ejected from the cartridge and is
picked up by the scrap system.
 Sensors monitor can exit for any potential jams.
OPERATING PRINCIPLE
OPERATING PRINCIPLE :

1. The cans supplied by the bodymaker are fed into the infeed track work.
2. Cans build back to trigger the can stop to release the cans into the infeed starwheel.
3. The infeed starwheel separates the cans for timed loading onto the main starwheel segments.
4. Main starwheel segments are aligned to rotating spindles and cutting heads.
5. Rotating spindles equipped with vacuum chucks secure the can to the rotating spindle.
6. The rotating spindle will advance to load the can at the correct height onto the cutting head.
7. The cutting head rotates in conjunction with the rotating spindle as the trimmer continues around in the cycle.
8. The cutting head knives close and cut the raw edge from the top of the container a it rotates around.
9. The rotating spindle will retract to its previous position to allow the can to unload.
10. The trim scrap will remain on the cutting head stripper pins until the rotating spindle has fully retracted.
11. The stripper plate is attached by rods to rotating spindle and is moved when the rotating spindle advances and
retracts.
12. The trim scrap taken away by the scrap vacuum duct to the room.
13. The vacuum chuck on the rotating spindle releases the vacuum and allows the can to enter the discharge track
work.
CONTROL PANEL OF TRIMMER
MACHINE
BELVAC CC93 CONTROL PANEL

1. EMERGENCY STOP PUSH BUTTON :

 Is a red illuminated push button used for stopping the trimmer in emergency situations only. The trimmer will
stop and the bodymaker will be put in standby mode.
 Must always depressed and remain depressed while working on or inside the trimmer.
 Twist the button clockwise and pull out before attempting to restart the machine.
2. TRIMMER STOP PUSH BUTTON :
 Is a red push button that should be used to stop the machine in any non-emergency situation. The bodymaker
will go into standby mode while the trimmer is stopped.
 Should be used while working on or inside the trimmer.
3. JOG/SAFE/RUN SELECTOR SWITCH :
 Jog : allows the trimmer to be run manually by subsequently pushing the appropriate jog/inch buttons
typically located near control panel. Remember to always follow the safety procedures when manually
operating the machine.
 Safe : puts the machine in safe mode and prevents the trimmer from operating.
 Run : puts the machine in run mode which allows the trimmer to operate automatically based on bodymaker
and/or line control communications.
4. TRIMMER START PUSH BUTTON :
 Is a green button used for starting the trimmer. The trimmer will only start if all faults are cleared and
the system has been reset via the blue reset button.
5. TRIMMER RESET PUSH BUTTON :
 Resets the interlock system and checks that all faults have been cleared before allowing the machine to
opeate under normal circumstances. This button must be pressed prior to restarting the machine.
6. INFEED JAM INDICATOR LIGHT :
 This light indicates a jam at the trimmer infeed or crossover trackwork from the bodymaker.
 Always follow safety and standard operating procedures when clearing any faults on the trimmer. Once
the fault has been cleared, all guards must be closed and the system reset before restarting the trimmer.
7. DISCHARGE JAM INDICATOR LIGHT :
 Indicates a jam at the trimmer discharge. This fault will also be triggered if there is a discrepancy
between cans coming into and out of the trimmer.
 Always follow proper safety and standard operating procedures when clearing any faults on the trimmer.
Once the fault has been cleared, all guards must be closed and the system reset before restarting the
trimmer.
8. DRIVE FAULTS INDICATOR LIGHT :
 Indicates a fault in the trimmer motor or VFD. Electrical maintenance support may be necessary to look
at the troubleshoot this fault.
 Always follow proper safety and standard operating procedures when clearing any faults on the trimmer.
Once the fault has been cleared, all guards must be closed and the system reset before restarting the
trimmer.
9. GUARD OPEN INDICATOR LIGHT :
 Indicates a guard open fault. All guards must be closed for the trimmer to operate properly.
 Always follow proper safety and standard operating procedures when clearing any faults on the
trimmer. Once the fault has been cleared, all guards must be closed and the system reset before
restarting the trimmer.
10 . LOW VACUUM INDICATOR LIGHT :
 Indicates low vacuum pressure to the machine based on the trimmer’s internal requirement. Proper
plant vacuum pressure must be provided to the machine for it to operate properly.
 Indicates a jam at the trimmer infeed or crossover trackwork from the bodymaker.
 Always follow proper safety and standard operating procedures when clearing any faults on the
trimmer. Once the fault has been cleared, all guards must be closed and the system reset before
restarting the trimmer.
11. LUBE FAULT INDICATOR LIGHT :
 Indicates a fault with the trimmer’s lubricating system. This could be due to low oil in the reservoir or
low pressure in the system. It may be necessary for maintenance to troubleshoot this fault.
 Resetting the system from this fault may require the start and stop buttons to be depressed
simultaneously for a period of time before resetting the system.
 Always follow proper safety and standard operating procedures when clearing any faults on the trimmer.
Once the fault has been cleared, all guards must be closed and the system reset before restarting the
trimmer.
