Direct Data Entry Devices Overview

RFID uses radio waves to read tags from a distance. Tags contain a microchip that stores data and an antenna that transmits information. RFID is used to track livestock, retail items, and library books. It allows for bulk and fast detection but can experience interference or hacking. MICR reads special magnetic ink characters on checks to process banking transactions with fewer errors. It has a limited character set. Optical mark readers detect marks like ticks or circles on forms and questionnaires.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
Reader
• RFIDs use radio waves to read information stored on a tag
• The tag can be read from a distance

RFID Components
The tag has 2 components:
Microchip – stores and processes information
Antenna – used to transmit and receive
information

Uses of RFID
• Livestock or pet tracking so that their whereabouts as well as owner
information are known at all times
• In retail, price of items can be stored on the tag and then
automatically read at a checkpoint. No scanning required.
• Library books can be tracked in and out automatically at the library
entrance.
• Used in passports (Classwork: Briefly describe how RFID technology is
used in passports)

Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
• The tags can be read from a distance
• It is a very robust and reliable technology
• Bulk detection is possible
• Reading the tag is very fast

Disadvantages
• Signals from two or more tags may overlap and cause interference
• Because they use radio waves they are relatively easy to jam or experience interruption
• More expensive than barcode systems
• Signals transmitted by the tag can be hacked

Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)
• MICR is a system which can read characters
printed in a special ink.
• Uses: used to process cheques in banking
operations
Advantages:
• There is no manual input, thus errors are
reduced
• If somebody writes over the magnetic ink
characters, it can still be read

Disadvantages of MICR
• Only certain characters can be read, and the number of different
characters is very limited
• It is a more expensive method than other methods used for direct
data entry

Optical Mark Reader
• Optical mark recognition is a system which can read marks written in
pen or pencil.
• Examples of marks: Tick, circle, line, underline, shade etc.
Uses:
• used to read questionnaires, multiple choice examination papers and
other types of forms in the form of lines or shaded areas.
