Overview of Additive Manufacturing Types

This document discusses additive manufacturing (3D printing) and focuses on powder bed fusion processes. It provides an introduction to additive manufacturing and describes the general process from CAD to application. It then details several types of additive manufacturing including powder bed fusion, binder jetting, and directed energy deposition. The remainder of the document specifically examines powder bed fusion processes like selective laser sintering and selective laser melting, describing the technical aspects and providing examples of applications like 3D printed pistons.

Introduction to Additive Manufacturing

◦ Additive manufacturing (AM), also called 3D printing or rapid prototyping, is an extraordinary way to deal
with modern creation that enables the making of lighter, stronger parts and systems.
◦ AM uses progressed advances to manufacture parts by joining and developing material layer-by-layer.
General Processes:
1. CAD
2. Conversion to STL
3. Transfer to AM machine
4. Machine Setup
5. Build
6. Removal
7. Post Processing ( If necessary)
8. Application
Types of Additive Manufacturing

There are different additive manufacturing processes:

 Powder Bed Fusion

 Binder Jetting

 Directed Energy Deposition

 Material Extrusion

 Material Jetting

 Sheet Lamination

 Vat Polymerization
Powder Bed Fusion Process

oSelective laser sintering (SLS) was the first commercialized PBF process.
oThe most well-known thermal sources for PBF are lasers.
oAll Powder Bed Fusion processes share a fundamental arrangement of
attributes. These are;
- Thermal source for fusion between powder particles
- Controlling powder combination – build platform,feed
cartridges
- Roller for adding and smoothing powder layers
- Powders
Selective Laser
Sintering
- Enclosed chamber
- Powders thermally fused
- Platform lowered by one layer

Selective
Laser Melting
•Also known as direct metal
laser melting (DMLM).
•Metals are difficult to process.
•Powder is being melted during
the production, not sintered.
•Well bonded, high density
structures.

Advantages
 Reduces improvement time by 30 %

 Less material, decreasing the weight of the cylinder by

10%.

 Next goal %20 weight reduction

 Heat is reduced by 20°C thanks to cooling circuit

 30 HP (%4) increase !
