INTRODUCTION
• Indians were dissatisfied of the dyarchic system of governance of the British Government.

• Gandhiji presented his educational ideas in All India National Education conference,
Wardha.
• In order to give final shape to the resolutions passed in the All India Education
conference, Wardha; Dr Zakir Hussain Committee was formed.
• This Committee enumerated the correlation between the basic handicrafts and other
subjects of the curriculum. The committee termed this scheme as ‘Bunyadi Talim’ or
‘Basic Education’.

• Mother tongue to be the medium of instruction.
• Craft centered education.
• Goods produced by the children should be utilized to meet the expenditure of the
schools
• In education of craft , the economic importance as well as its social and scientific
importance should be given place.
PRINCIPLE OF BASIC EDUCATION

• Principle of free and compulsory education.

• Principle of making education self supporting.

MERITS OF BASIC EDUCATION

• The system was able to remove class and caste distinction.

• It also removes the barriers between the peoples of different sections of the society.
• Basic education is activity-centered education. The child is not a passive learner but an active
participant in the learning process.
• It primarily considered the constructive and creative instincts of children.
• The system is based upon the cultural and social heritage of the land. As such, it inculcates
social and moral values in the minds of the students.
• . It aims at a harmonious development of the body, mind and soul.
DE-MERITS OF BASIC EDUCATION

• Teachers had to depend upon the earnings of the students. This had a demoralizing effect on
teacher-pupil relationship.
• Too much emphasis on craft had led the neglect of liberal education.
• Basic Education is often regarded as inferior type of education meant for the poor villagers.
It has nothing to do with the urban people.
• Basic Education can in no way help in the progress of modern scientific and technological
development of the society, which was the need of the day.
• Sequential teaching not possible.
IMPACT OF BASIC EDUCATION
• The basic education was first of all implemented in U.P and is still in operation.
• But the reality is quite contrary to what is set out to be in schools and
departmental offices, only the term basic is being used. Neither the curriculum is
followed, nor is there any provision to teach the basic crafts.
• Even teaching is not carried out through integrated method.
• The modern education system needs to be reformed at elementary stage keeping
in view of the moral value and employability features of the Gandhiji’s basic
education.
CONCLUSION

• Basic education is related to the basic needs and interest of the education for
the development of a child.
• The aim of Gandhiji’s basic education was to educate the students on crafts
which would enable them to solve the problems of their livelihood and at the
same time develop qualities of good citizenship.
• It needs to be reformed on modern lines then it may serve as one of the most
interesting and fruitful techniques of instruction at elementary stage
