Mali's Energy Profile and Potential

Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa with a population of approximately 15 million people. Biomass accounts for 78% of Mali's primary energy supply, while fuel imports make up 18% and renewable electricity from hydropower accounts for 4%. Only 1/4 of Mali's population has access to electricity, with 59% access in urban areas and 14% in rural areas. Mali has significant potential for solar, wind, and hydroelectric energy due to high solar irradiance and wind speeds, as well as an estimated 1,150MW of hydroelectric potential from large sites. The country's energy strategy focuses on developing local hydropower and solar resources to reduce dependence on expensive petroleum imports.

ENERGY PROFILE IN MALI

• Officially the Republic of Mali is a landlocked country in west Africa.

• The capital city of Mali is Bamako and is in Africa region, the national
language is French.
• Has a population of approximately 15 million in 2013, Mali is a poor country .
• Electricity prices in Mali are high compared to similar countries, the cost of
producing power in Mali is between $0.33 & 0.39 per kwh.
• At 78% of 3500 ktoe annual primary energy supply Biomass plays the
dominant role in Malian energy balance, fuel provision accounting for 18% of
the primary supply.
• Mali fully depends on importation ,4% of the remaining primary energy
supply is largely made up of renewably generated electricity mainly by
hydropower.
Electricity Provision
• A n estimated 20% of fuel import is used for grid based
electricity production approximately 170mw installed
capacity.
• Total annual electricity production is 500-600Gwh.
• ¼ of Malian population is provided with electricity ,59% in
urban areas & 14% in rural areas.
Renewable Energy Potential
• Whilst current primary energy supply is largely by either
[non-renewable ] use of biomass or by imported fossils fuels
,the country potential for renewable is large.
SOLAR
• Solar irridiation is well distributed over the territory & at 5.7kw/m2/day is
relatively high.
• Projects for building of solar thermal plants with a capacity of more than
100mw are being prepared although climate proofing these installation s is
not yet considered.
• With recent drops in pv panels prices also more pv generated electricity is
becoming available , ranging from Pico pv devices to several kwh pv power
plants.
WIND.
• Significant wind energy potential is availablie, though hardly used, particularly
in the sahelian & Saharan zones, where annual average wind speed is
estimated at 3-7m/s.
Hydro.
The potential for large hydroelectric sites [100mw]is estimated at 1,150mw.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
• Mali has a significant energy potential mainly in the
residential ,industrial & tertiary sectors
• Projects are currentry ongoing to improve the energy
efficiency of public buildings.
• The general energy strategy of Mali focuses on the
development of local resources such as hydropower & solar
energy in order to reduce petroleum imports.
• The ministry of energy and water is one of the biggest and
most important ministries in Mali, and is responsible for
policy formulating ,promotion ,coordination ,monitoring and
evaluation.
