Gas Welding Techniques and Applications

- Gas welding is a fusion welding process that uses a gas flame, such as oxy-acetylene, as a heat source to melt and join metal parts. Additional filler metal is sometimes needed depending on the thickness of the material. - During welding, the flame is used to heat the joint edges until the metal melts and fuses together. Additional filler metal can be added to the weld pool to join with the parent metal. - The oxy-acetylene flame is commonly used as it produces very high temperatures and can weld a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Equipment used includes oxygen and acetylene hoses, regulators, torches, filler rods, and fluxes

 INTRODUCTION
1. Gas welding is a fusion – welding process which gas is used as a source of heat to
melt the end of the pieces to be joined on solidification .
2. A filler metal is needed in welding of sheet above 1.5mm thickness but no filler
metal is needed for welding bellow 1.5 mm thickness.
3. A filler metal is added in the form of a filler rod and must be having the same
composition as that of the parent metal .
4. Various gas combination like oxy-hydrogen, oxy- propane and oxy-acetylene gas
may be used for producing a hot flame for welding of metal
5. The oxy-acetylene flame is most widely used as it produce very high temperature
(3,500˚C) and can be used for welding of variety of ferrous and non ferrous
-During the welding, heat from the flame is concentrated the joint edges until the metal
melts and starts to flow. When the molten metal from both sides melts it starts to fuse,
when the metal cools down the two parts become Permanently joined .

-Additional Filler Metal is fed in by hand into the weld pool, at regular intervals where it
becomes molten and joins with the parent metal.
The Oxy-acetylene welding flame
Neutral:
Equal acetylene & oxygen (low
carbonsteel, mild steels).

Oxidizing :
Excess oxygen (1.5:1) (Brasses,Bronzes,
copper).

Reducing or Carburizing:
Excess acetylene (0.9:1)(Alloy steels and
aluminium alloys).
The oxy-acetylene flame has two distinct zones
-The inner zone (Primary combustion Zone)
is the hottest part of the flame. The welding
should be performed so as the point of the inner
zone should be just above the joint edges.

-The outer zone (secondary combustion zone)

• Preheats the joint edges.
• Prevents oxidation by using some of the
surrounding oxygen from weld pool for
combustion and gives off carbon dioxide and
water vapour.
Equipment used in Oxy-Acetylene welding
-The oxygen and acetylene hose pipes
-Gases used
-Gas pressure Regulators
-Flashback arrestor
-Welding torch/Welding nozzle
-Filler rods and fluxes
ADVANTAGES OF GAS WELDING
-The equipment is usually of low cost and portable.
-The cost and maintenance of welding equipment is low when compared to other
welding equipments.
-The rate of heating and cooling is relative slow.
-It can be applied to a wide variety of manufacturing and maintenance.
-Better Control over the Temperature.
-Suitable to Weld Dissimilar Metals.
DISADVANTAGES OF GAS WELDING
-Not suitable for thick sections.
-Fluxes used in certain welding operation produce flame that are irritating to the
eyes, nose, throat and lungs.
-Cannot reach the temperatures of arc welding.
APPLICATION OF GAS WELDING
-For joining thin materials.
-For joining most ferrous and non – ferrous metals
-Automotive and air craft industries
